Four Days in the Snow: A Loyal Dog’s Silent Vigil Beside a Young Life Lost in Himachal’s Mountains
A heartbreaking incident from Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district has touched hearts across the region, revealing a rare and powerful display of loyalty and devotion by a pet dog.
Nineteen-year-old Vikasit Rana and his 13-year-old cousin, Piyush Kumar, had set out on January 23 for a trek to the Bharmani Mata Temple in Bharmour to record videos in the scenic hills.
Soon after, the area was hit by heavy snowfall, cutting off routes and slowing rescue operations amid dangerous conditions.
When search teams finally reached the isolated, snow-laden site days later, they found young Piyush’s body — and beside him, a dog that had refused to leave his side.
For nearly four days, the pet endured freezing temperatures, biting winds, and deep snow, remaining close to the boy without food, water, or shelter.
While helicopters and drones scanned the mountains from above, the animal stayed on the ground, keeping a silent vigil.
Rescue personnel said the dog appeared calm and composed, showing neither fear nor aggression — only unwavering loyalty.
Deeply moved by the scene, the rescue team ensured the dog was airlifted along with the body. Bharmour MLA Dr Janak Raj later confirmed that the pet, which belonged to Vikasit Rana, was safely brought down and reunited with the family.
The Himachal State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) said the operation concluded on Monday afternoon.
Tents were first spotted around 9:30 am, followed by the recovery of one body at 10 am, which was flown to the Chaurasi Temple helipad.
The second body was located at 1:35 pm and later handed over to relatives for the final rites.
There have been countless stories of animals saving human lives or alerting people to danger, but this incident stands apart — not of rescue, but of loyalty beyond death.
