From IIT Engineer to Horror Icon: The Unconventional Journey of Anirudh Agarwal

In an era where “manifestation” is a fashionable catchphrase, the life of Anirudh Agarwal stands as a striking example of dreams fulfilled in the most unexpected form.

Raised in a modest household in Dehradun, Anirudh was the eighth among ten siblings.

His father managed a small grocery store while his mother cared for the family at home.

As a young boy, he idolized Jeetendra and quietly nurtured ambitions of stepping into the world of cinema.

His father, however, did not support the idea of pursuing acting as a career.

Setting aside his artistic aspirations, Anirudh turned toward academics.

Gifted and disciplined, he earned admission to IIT Roorkee to study engineering.

Yet destiny intervened when he unexpectedly spotted his screen idol in his hometown.

He interpreted the encounter as a sign and decided to follow his heart.

Leaving behind a secure path, he relocated to Mumbai, determined to carve out a space in the film industry.

A Sudden Turn of Fate

Towering at nearly seven feet with a commanding presence, Anirudh assumed that his striking appearance would make him a natural fit for leading roles. But life had other plans.

He was diagnosed with a pituitary gland tumour that triggered a severe hormonal imbalance, altering his facial features and limbs. The transformation was dramatic.

The man once admired for his looks began to appear intimidating. In interviews, he later admitted that strangers — especially young women — often reacted with fear at the mere sight of him.

What seemed like the end of his dream, however, was merely a change in direction.

A Door Opens in the Dark

A friend suggested that he meet the legendary Ramsay Brothers, known for shaping Hindi horror cinema.

Taking the advice, Anirudh walked into their office — and instantly captured attention. His imposing stature left a powerful impression.

Filmmaker Tulsi Ramsay cast him in Purana Mandir, even though much of the film had already been shot.

The team had been searching tirelessly for someone who could convincingly portray the sinister character Samri. When Anirudh appeared, they knew they had found their man.

The production demanded extraordinary effort. Filming in Mahabaleshwar, his elaborate makeup routine took up to eight hours daily. For a 2 PM shoot, he would begin preparing at dawn.

A Fright Too Real

One unforgettable incident involved co-star Aarti Gupta. She had not seen Anirudh in full costume before filming. When she entered his dimly lit makeup room and turned around to face his monstrous avatar, she screamed and fainted.

The moment, though alarming, became part of the film’s lore. Despite the chaos, Purana Mandir went on to achieve cult status.

Anirudh later recounted that he, too,o was startled by the episode. Emerging from the washroom in full makeup, he found himself at the center of an unexpected commotion.

Even members of the Ramsay family admitted they were unsettled by his appearance. Amit Ramsay once revealed that seeing Anirudh as a child left such a strong impression that the image still haunted him years later.

Typecast in Terror

Following the success of Purana Mandir, Anirudh became a staple in horror films like Saamri and Bandh Darwaza.

Though he later appeared in mainstream projects such as Bandit Queen, Mela starring Aamir Khan, and Talaash: In

The Hunt Begins, featuring Akshay Kumar, he found himself firmly associated with horror roles.

His popularity in the genre ironically restricted his opportunities elsewhere. He often accepted smaller parts — fighters, henchmen, background characters — while the leading roles he once envisioned remained elusive.

A Brush with Death

During the filming of Bandh Darwaza, Anirudh narrowly escaped tragedy. In one scene, he was placed inside a coffin with a small breathing gap. By mistake, the opening was sealed shut.

The coffin was soundproof, and his cries went unheard. It was only by chance that someone opened it in time. He later reflected that the incident could have cost him his life.

An Unsettling Childhood Memory

Despite embodying terror onscreen, Anirudh once shared a chilling experience from his childhood.

He recalled an eerie episode in Dehradun when his mother, in the middle of the night, began shouting at an unseen presence.

He was just ten years old at the time. Though educated and rational, he admitted that the event left a lasting impression on him, and his father later told him the house had a troubled history.

Life Beyond the Spotlight

As the Ramsay Brothers shifted their focus from films to television, opportunities dwindled.

Eventually, Anirudh stepped away from acting and entered the construction business, where he now runs his own company.

His journey may not have unfolded the way he once imagined, but he did achieve his dream of becoming an actor — albeit as a cult figure of horror cinema rather than a conventional leading man.

Sometimes, the universe grants wishes — just not in the form one expects.
