In a move that signals growing trust and long-term strategic alignment, Israel has agreed to open the doors to some of its most closely guarded military technologies for India — including next-generation laser defence systems and advanced stand-off missile capabilities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Israel on February 25–26 for a two-day state trip that is being viewed not merely as ceremonial diplomacy, but as a decisive step in strengthening India’s defence architecture amid shifting global equations.

While no blockbuster arms deal may be signed during the visit, insiders suggest something far more consequential is unfolding — a deep structural partnership that could see bilateral defence cooperation cross the $10 billion mark in the coming years.

A Rare Sharing of Strategic Technology

Sources indicate that Israel’s decision to share high-end laser interception systems and stand-off missile technologies is unprecedented. Such sensitive technologies are rarely transferred, even among long-standing allies.

The groundwork for this expanded cooperation was laid during Indian Defence Secretary R.K. Singh’s visit to Israel last year. Now, the partnership is moving from procurement to co-development.

At the heart of this collaboration is “Mission Sudarshan” — an ambitious vision articulated by Prime Minister Modi to build a layered, near-impenetrable missile defence shield over Indian territory.

Israel, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, brings formidable expertise in this domain. Its battle-tested defence systems include:

• Arrow missile system for long-range missile interception
• David’s Sling for mid-range threats
• Iron Dome for short-range rockets and projectiles

These systems have demonstrated effectiveness in live combat scenarios, including the interception of hostile missile attacks. India now seeks to integrate similar layered capabilities into its own strategic shield.

India’s growing defence strength is not solely built on foreign acquisitions. It reflects a hybrid approach — combining indigenous innovation with collaboration from technologically advanced nations.

The Modi–Netanyahu dialogue is also expected to explore cooperation in quantum computing, water management, desalination technologies and advanced agriculture — areas where Israel’s innovation ecosystem aligns naturally with India’s scale and developmental needs.

From drip irrigation systems that revolutionised arid farming to high-end scientific research collaborations, the partnership increasingly spans security and sustainability alike.
