Global Hypocrisy and Judicial Courage: From Pakistan’s Terror Haven to US Courts Standing Firm
By BK Singh
A deadly car bombing outside the headquarters of Pakistan’s paramilitary forces in Quetta on Tuesday left at least 10 dead and 30 injured. While the attackers arrived in a vehicle, opened fire, and then detonated the car, the security forces retaliated, killing all four assailants.
The blast shattered windows miles away, threw vehicles into chaos, and left the wounded fighting for life in hospitals.
The incident is tragically ironic. Pakistan, a nation repeatedly designated as a state sponsor of terrorism, has long provided a haven, training, and operational security to groups that carry out terror attacks worldwide, particularly against India, its declared enemy number one.
Yet, this very country, whose leaders are born into a rotten mindset of deceit and duplicity, faces terror on its home turf.
Thanks in no small part to the United States, Pakistani generals and leaders like Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif continue to be feted and welcomed, even though Pakistan-backed terrorists were behind the 9/11 attacks — an atrocity etched into the annals of history.
Worse still, Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif recently confessed that Pakistan has sponsored terrorism for decades, serving a double game for the US and the West. What more proof does the world need?
Meanwhile, while the world turns a blind eye to such hypocrisy, the US judiciary has delivered a rare, shining beacon of integrity. In Boston, US District Judge William Young ruled that the Trump administration acted unlawfully by targeting foreign students and academics engaged in pro-Palestinian advocacy. The administration had cancelled visas, detained, and even deported students purely because of their political speech — a direct violation of the First Amendment.
Judge Young wrote bluntly that officials from the State Department and Department of Homeland Security “acted in concert to misuse the sweeping powers of their respective offices to target noncitizen pro-Palestinians for deportation primarily on account of their First Amendment-protected political speech.” He added that these actions were designed to instill fear and suppress lawful dissent, stripping students of the freedoms they are constitutionally guaranteed.
The case arose after Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil was arrested as the first known victim, and since then, hundreds of foreign students have faced visa cancellations or detentions. The faculty groups representing them argued that these retaliatory measures were part of a broader political crackdown following Trump’s executive orders aimed at suppressing “hateful ideology” and combating antisemitism — orders issued in the wake of campus protests against Israel’s 2023 Gaza campaign.
While the Trump administration attempted to cloak this as national security, Judge Young dismantled the façade, affirming that constitutional rights are not negotiable, even for non-citizens. This ruling underscores the fact that a judiciary can, and must, act as a bulwark against authoritarian overreach, standing firm for justice even when the executive wields immense power.
The Stark Contrast
Herein lies a cruel global irony: while Pakistan brazenly nurtures terrorists, sponsors chaos, and receives diplomatic indulgence from powers like the US, the same US judiciary fearlessly defends constitutional freedoms at home. On one hand, the world applauds America for mediating fragile ceasefires in Ukraine; on the other, it silently allows US leaders to hug and honor generals like Asim Munir and politicians like Shehbaz Sharif, who openly admit decades of complicity in terrorism.
Judge Young’s ruling is a testament to what principled governance and accountability look like. It reminds the world that freedom of speech, even for unpopular causes, is a line that cannot be crossed, no matter the political winds. It also highlights a bitter truth: while some nations profit from chaos and terror, true justice often emerges quietly, from those who refuse to bow to power.
The contrast could not be starker. One nation revels in duplicity, exporting violence while begging for global legitimacy. Another, even amidst political pressures and polarizing leadership, demonstrates that courage, principle, and the rule of law still matter.
This is a lesson in accountability, hypocrisy, and hope: while global powers sometimes embrace the violent and the corrupt, there are still systems and individuals willing to protect justice and human rights — even against the mightiest of authorities.
