Govt Agrees to 16-Hour Lok Sabha Debate on Operation Sindoor, Pahalgam Attack—Opposition Demands PM Modi’s Presence This Week
In a significant development on the first day of the Monsoon Session, the central government on Monday agreed to hold a 16-hour discussion in the Lok Sabha on two major national security concerns: Operation Sindoor and the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. However, the actual debate is likely to take place next week, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to be abroad during the current week.
The decision was conveyed during a Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, where senior government officials informed members that the Prime Minister’s physical presence in the House—something the opposition has strongly insisted upon—would only be possible after his return from an international visit.
Opposition Pushes for Immediate Debate, PM’s Reply
The opposition parties, however, protested strongly, accusing the government of delaying discussions on pressing national issues. They reiterated that Prime Minister Modi must personally respond in Parliament on both the Pahalgam terror incident and the execution of Operation Sindoor, a high-stakes counter-terror operation carried out in Jammu & Kashmir recently.
Opposition leaders also criticized the government’s agenda for this week, pointing out that it made no mention of their demand for a structured debate on the attacks, which have sparked national outrage and concerns over internal security.
Further escalating their demands, opposition MPs said that Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh should also be present during the debate to provide clarity and accountability on the Centre’s actions and response to the recent spate of terror activities.
Widening the Agenda: Bihar and Manipur Also in Focus
Apart from national security, several opposition leaders demanded a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, raising concerns about transparency and potential irregularities in the process.
The ongoing unrest and humanitarian crisis in Manipur was also raised, with opposition parties calling for a separate, in-depth debate on the deteriorating law and order situation in the northeastern state.
Monsoon Session Begins with Heated Exchanges
The Monsoon Session of Parliament, which began on Monday, kicked off with heightened tensions as both the treasury and opposition benches clashed over the scheduling and scope of debates. The ruling alliance defended its approach, saying it is committed to a full discussion with ministerial presence, while the opposition accused the government of stonewalling and evading critical scrutiny.
With the nation’s security, electoral transparency, and internal peace in question, the upcoming days of the session are expected to be politically intense and closely watched.
