Grandmother and Infant Granddaughter Killed in Hit-and-Run on Prayagraj–Lucknow Highway

Kunda (Pratapgarh):
A routine morning chore turned tragic on Wednesday when a woman carrying her 10-month-old granddaughter was run over by a speeding pickup vehicle while crossing the highway near Tiwari Pur village.

Both died on the spot, leaving two families devastated.

The victims were identified as Sumerra Patel (45) and her infant granddaughter, Arya.

Sumerra, wife of Ramsajeevan Patel, was on her way to a dairy located across the Prayagraj–Lucknow Highway, carrying milk and holding Arya in her arms.

At around 8 a.m., as she attempted to cross the road opposite Tiwari Pur in the Manikpur police station area, a pickup truck speeding along the highway struck them.

Eyewitnesses said the impact threw both onto the road.

In a desperate attempt to flee, the driver allegedly ran over them before escaping the scene.

Villagers immediately alerted the police. A response team from UP-112 rushed the victims to the Community Health Centre in Kunda, where doctors declared them dead.

The news plunged the household into grief.

Sumerra’s husband, who works in Prayagraj, rushed home after receiving the call, while her son-in-law, Raju Patel, travelled from Raebareli.

Sumerra is survived by two married daughters and a 15-year-old son who is still studying.

Arya was the only child of Pooja Patel, Sumerra’s daughter, who had been married two years ago and was visiting her parental home at the time of the accident.

The loss of the infant has compounded the family’s anguish.

Police said CCTV footage from nearby establishments and highway cameras is being examined to trace the pickup vehicle involved in the hit-and-run.

The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination to the district headquarters, and a case has been registered.

Authorities reiterated appeals for caution on busy highways passing through habitations, where pedestrians often risk their lives crossing fast-moving traffic.
