Gujarat Titans Cruise Past Lucknow Super Giants as Gill and Buttler Script Commanding Chase at Ekana
Lucknow Super Giants’ woes at home continued as the Ekana Stadium once again turned into a fortress for the opposition.
Gujarat Titans produced a clinical all-round display to register a convincing seven-wicket victory on Sunday, handing Lucknow its sixth successive defeat at the venue.
Chasing a modest target of 165, the Gujarat Titans approached the task with authority and composure. Skipper Shubman Gill led from the front with a classy 56, while the ever-dangerous Jos Buttler celebrated his 100th T20 half-century in style with a blistering 60.
The duo stitched together a decisive 84-run partnership for the second wicket, effectively taking the game away from the hosts.
Gujarat’s intent was visible from the outset. Sai Sudharsan set the tone by striking two crisp boundaries off Mohammed Shami in the opening over, while Gill soon found his rhythm emphatically.
The elegant right-hander punished Shami in his third over, smashing three fours and a towering six to collect 20 runs and put the Titans firmly in control of the chase.
Although Digvesh Rathi managed to remove Sudharsan against the run of play, any hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed when Buttler walked in and launched a calculated assault.
Mixing timing with brute force, Buttler peppered the boundary ropes with 11 fours in a fluent knock that showcased both control and aggression.
Lucknow’s bowling attack struggled to apply sustained pressure. Debutant George Linde failed to make an impact with the ball, conceding boundaries at regular intervals, while Avesh Khan looked inconsistent in his lines and lengths.
Rathi bowled with discipline but lacked support from the other end.
Even though Gill and Buttler fell in quick succession, the outcome was never in doubt as Washington Sundar and Rahul Tewatia calmly wrapped up the chase with powerful finishing strokes.
Earlier, Lucknow Super Giants endured a stop-start innings on a sluggish surface where timing the ball proved challenging.
Their batting graph resembled a fluctuating roller coaster — a brisk beginning, a stagnant middle phase, and a late flourish that came slightly too late to pose a serious challenge.
Lucknow raced to 60 runs in the Powerplay, but the momentum stalled as Gujarat’s bowlers tightened their grip in the middle overs.
From a promising 69 for two, the innings lost direction with wickets falling at regular intervals, preventing any batter from converting a start into a match-defining score.
Prasidh Krishna was the standout performer with the ball, cleverly varying his pace to claim four wickets for 28 runs, while Rashid Khan applied the squeeze with his trademark accuracy, stifling the scoring rate.
Cameos from the lower order provided a late surge, with useful contributions helping Lucknow reach 164 for eight, including 44 runs in the final three overs.
However, the total always appeared slightly under par, and the Gujarat Titans made the chase look far easier than expected.
With this dominant victory, the Titans strengthened their campaign, while Lucknow Super Giants were left searching for answers as their struggles at home continued.
