Hapur: Doctors Remove 48 Spoons, Toothbrushes, and Pens from Man’s Stomach

1

In a bizarre and shocking medical case, doctors in Hapur successfully removed a large number of foreign objects—including 29 steel spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and two ballpoint pens—from the stomach of a 40-year-old man named Sachin.

The patient, a resident of Darveshpur village in Bulandshahr district, had been complaining of severe abdominal pain for several weeks before the extraordinary discovery was made.

The Case Comes to Light

Sachin had been admitted to Devanandini Hospital under the care of Dr. Shyam Kumar after suffering from continuous stomach pain that did not subside despite consulting multiple doctors.

About a month earlier, he had been discharged from a de-addiction center in Ghaziabad, where he was undergoing treatment for substance abuse.

After his release, he began experiencing persistent abdominal discomfort, which gradually worsened.

Medical Investigation and Diagnosis

Upon examination, an X-ray revealed hard and solid objects inside the stomach, raising alarm. A subsequent CT scan confirmed the suspicion that several foreign materials were lodged in the patient’s abdomen.

To gain clarity, doctors performed an endoscopy, which showed multiple metallic and plastic items inside.

Finally, surgery was carried out, and to everyone’s astonishment, 29 broken steel spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and two pens were carefully removed from the man’s stomach.

The procedure was successful, and Sachin is now reported to be gradually recovering.

How Did He Swallow These Objects?

According to Dr. Shyam Kumar, the family revealed an unusual truth during questioning. While staying at the de-addiction center, Sachin developed the habit of swallowing non-edible objects.

Out of frustration and anger—particularly because he complained that he was not being given enough food—he began breaking the heads of steel spoons and toothbrushes and consuming them.

Medical experts suggest that this unusual behavior may have been linked to a severe mental health condition. Dr. Ravi Rana, a neuro-psychiatrist from Meerut, explained that such habits are often connected to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), which, if left untreated, can escalate into psychosis.

Patients suffering from these conditions frequently experience restlessness, anxiety, and panic, and some develop compulsive behaviors such as eating hair, needles, spoons, toothbrushes, or other strange objects.

Rare but Dangerous Condition

This case highlights not only the dangers of substance abuse and inadequate mental health treatment but also the importance of early psychiatric intervention.

Without timely surgery, the patient could have faced life-threatening complications such as intestinal blockage, internal injuries, or infections.

Recovery and Outlook

The surgery was described as challenging but successful. Doctors stated that Sachin is responding well to treatment and will remain under close observation. However, they emphasized the urgent need for psychiatric care to address his underlying condition and prevent a recurrence of such behavior.
