Holi Water Balloon Clash Turns Fatal in Uttam Nagar; Seven Held, Heavy Security Deployed

New Delhi — Police have detained two more suspects and taken a juvenile into custody in connection with the attack on a 26-year-old man that resulted in his death following a dispute over a water balloon during Holi celebrations in Dwarka’s Uttam Nagar area.

On Saturday morning, tension continued in the JJ Colony where the victim, Tarun, lived. To maintain order, the Delhi Police, along with paramilitary personnel, conducted a flag march through the neighbourhood.

Authorities said two companies of paramilitary forces, supported by local police units, have been stationed in the locality to prevent any further unrest.

Meanwhile, representatives of a right-wing political organisation met Tarun’s father and other relatives at their home.

Political leaders, including BJP West Delhi MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat, also visited the family to express support.

The neighbourhood had already witnessed uneasy scenes on Friday. According to sources, some residents allegedly attempted to set fire to a vehicle belonging to one of the accused that was parked outside their locked residence in the same colony late Friday night.

Earlier that evening, supporters of a right-wing group assembled near Uttam Nagar Metro Station and staged a road blockade, demanding strict action against those responsible for the killing. Police later cleared the crowd using mild force.

Authorities confirmed that seven individuals in total, including one minor, have been taken into custody so far. Four suspects from the victim’s neighbourhood were arrested earlier on Friday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Kushal Pal Singh said the accused are aged 17 to 45, while two additional suspects are still being traced. He added that the law-and-order situation remains under control.

“To prevent any further disturbance, we have put in place extensive security arrangements.

The area has been divided into zones, sectors and sub-sectors. Officers of DCP rank monitor each zone, ACP-level officials supervise sectors, and inspectors, along with sub-inspectors, manage the sub-sectors,” DCP Singh explained.

He also confirmed that murder charges have now been added to the FIR following Tarun’s death.

Police said the victim’s family alleged that the conflict began when Tarun’s 11-year-old cousin threw a balloon filled with coloured water from the rooftop of a house toward another relative during Holi celebrations.

The balloon reportedly burst on the ground, splashing water onto the clothes of a neighbour.

According to the complaint filed by Tarun’s relatives, the woman who was splashed became angry, shouted abuses, and left the scene before returning later with members of her family.

This led to a confrontation between the two sides, during which several people from both families were injured. After the altercation, the groups initially dispersed and returned to their homes.

However, investigators said that when Tarun was later walking back home, members of the opposing family allegedly intercepted him and assaulted him, leaving him severely injured on the road.

Tarun’s relatives claim that more than a dozen people were involved in the attack.

DCP Singh said the inquiry revealed that on March 4, after the balloon-throwing episode, both families clashed on the street. In that confrontation, three individuals from one family and five from the other sustained injuries.

Except for Tarun, all the injured persons were treated and released from hospital the same day.

Police officials also noted that the two families have lived in the same neighbourhood for decades and have known each other for nearly 50 years.

They had reportedly been involved in minor disagreements in the past over issues such as parking, waste disposal, and other everyday matters.
