Homeless Man Mauled by Stray Dogs in Dwarka, Succumbs to Injuries; Tragedy Highlights Urban Neglect

New Delhi: In a deeply disturbing incident that underscores the vulnerability of the homeless in India’s cities, a 60-year-old man died after being viciously attacked by a pack of stray dogs in Dwarka, southwest Delhi, police said on Friday.

The attack occurred late Tuesday night near St. Mary’s School in Sector 19. The victim, identified as Raju, reportedly encountered a group of stray dogs that began howling and chasing him, police officials said.

In a desperate attempt to save his life, Raju ran towards a nearby park. However, the dogs followed him and launched a ferocious attack.

By the time police personnel reached the spot, he had sustained severe injuries, and his clothes had been almost completely torn off, indicating the brutality of the assault.

Raju was rushed for medical treatment but succumbed to his injuries on the intervening night of Wednesday, January 7, and Thursday, January 8, while undergoing treatment, police added.

Investigators said Raju was a native of Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh. For over a year, he had been living on roads and footpaths in Delhi after leaving his home due to frequent domestic disputes.

He is survived by his wife and three children. According to police, his wife works as a domestic help in a residential society in Sector 11, Dwarka, and has been struggling to support the family amid financial hardship.

Initially, police were unable to establish Raju’s identity as he was not carrying any personal documents at the time of the incident. After a post-mortem examination was conducted, authorities traced his family.

The body was subsequently handed over to his relatives, who left for Sitapur on Thursday morning to perform his last rites.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns over the growing menace of stray dogs in residential areas and the absence of effective safety mechanisms for homeless individuals, who often remain exposed to such life-threatening risks, especially during the night.
