Horrific Collision on Under-Construction Ganga Expressway: Six Members of One Family Killed, Two Injured in Sambhal Head-On Crash
Late Thursday evening, tragedy struck on an unopened stretch of the Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district when a vegetable-laden pickup truck and a Maruti Alto collided head-on — killing six people from a single family and critically injuring two others.
The deceased belonged to a family from Adampur town in Amroha district. They were returning from a child’s naming ceremony in Bisaru village (Bahjoi police station area) when the accident occurred near Rasulpur Dhatra village under the Hayatnagar police station limits, around 7 pm.
The victims have been identified as: wife Renu (35), daughter Riya (10), son Bhaskar (7), sister-in-law Geeta (28), sister Devvati (46), and nephew Kapil (12). The driver — 36-year-old Rohit Khadgawanshi — survived along with his younger son Jai, though both are in critical condition.
Officials said the crash was catastrophic: both vehicles were reportedly traveling in the same (and only) functional lane on that incomplete stretch of the expressway, as the parallel lane had not yet opened.
The force of impact crushed the pickup’s front and flattened the Alto.
On receiving the emergency call, police teams — including SHO Saurabh Tyagi, Inspector Umesh Solanki, and ASP (North) Kuldeep Singh — rushed to the scene. The injured were taken to local hospitals, while the bodies were sent for post-mortem.
The district administration’s top officials, including District Magistrate Dr. Rajender Pensiya, also visited the crash site late in the evening.
According to authorities, overspeeding appears to be a likely cause, raising fresh questions about safety protocols on under-construction expressway stretches that are seeing vehicular movement even before formal inauguration.
Latest Developments
- Two of the injured victims — Rohit and his son Jai — are in critical condition in the hospital. Medical teams have referred them to higher-centre facilities for advanced treatment.
- Local administration has begun an inquiry into the accident, including examination of whether proper safety measures (signage, traffic control) were in place on the under-construction expressway stretch.
- The shocking deaths have sparked outrage and grief in their native villages of Adampur and Bisaru; the community is demanding accountability and action to prevent such tragedies on incomplete/high-speed expressway corridors.
Context & Larger Concerns
The Ganga Expressway, a key infrastructure project meant to connect Meerut to Prayagraj, remains under construction — yet parts of it are witnessing vehicular traffic.
This accident adds to mounting concerns about road safety, especially when unfinished expressway sections are used by high-speed vehicles without adequate safeguards.
As one family’s trip to a joyous ceremony turned into an irreversible tragedy, the incident underscores the urgent need for stricter regulation, traffic control, and thorough safety audits before allowing public transit on under-construction expressways.
