Horror in Bangladesh: Hindu Youth Burnt Alive in Narsingdi, Sparks Outrage and Deep Concern in India
Another shocking act of violence against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh has sent waves of anger and anguish across India, raising serious questions about the safety of minorities as the country prepares for national elections next month.
Chanchal Bhowmik, a 25-year-old worker from Lakshmipur village in Cumilla district, was burnt to death late Friday night while he was asleep inside a garage in Narsingdi.
By the time fire services reached the spot and brought the blaze under control, his body had been completely charred.
While authorities initially suspected a short circuit as the cause of the fire, fresh revelations from CCTV footage have pointed towards a far more sinister possibility.
According to officials from Narsingdi Model Police Station, an unidentified man was seen gathering paper and cloth soaked in automobile lubricants from nearby areas before deliberately setting them ablaze in front of the garage.
Police have launched efforts to trace the suspect seen in the footage and have assured further investigation.
After a post-mortem examination, Bhowmik’s body was handed over to his grieving family.
This horrifying death is part of a disturbing pattern of violence targeting minorities in Bangladesh in recent months.
It follows the brutal lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in Bhaluka of Mymensingh district during December, amid a surge in attacks against minority communities.
That wave of unrest was triggered after the death of student activist Hadi Osman, who had been involved in protests against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.
The lynching of Das sparked massive protests and counter-protests in both India and Bangladesh, eventually leading to strained diplomatic relations and the suspension of visa services in December.
Adding to the growing alarm, India’s Ministry of External Affairs last month acknowledged more than 2,900 reported incidents of violence against minorities in Bangladesh during the tenure of the interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, calling the situation a matter of “grave concern.”
Across India, there is an overwhelming sense of outrage and sorrow over Bhowmik’s killing. Many see it as yet another example of the brutal and barbaric hatred being unleashed against Hindus in Bangladesh.
The recurring nature of such crimes has strengthened the perception that law enforcement authorities are either helpless or acting as silent spectators while minorities face horrifying attacks.
The incident has once again brought the spotlight on the deep-rooted hostility nurtured by sections of society against Hindus in Bangladesh, and the urgent need for firm action to protect vulnerable communities before the violence spirals further out of control.
