Hrithik Roshan’s Remarks on Dhurandhar Spark Online Backlash, Reignite Debate on Cinema, Politics, and Propaganda
By Tanveer Zaidi
Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan recently found himself at the centre of a heated social media storm after he expressed reservations about the political messaging of the film Dhurandhar.
His comments, though measured and nuanced, triggered sharp reactions online, with some users branding his views as “anti-national.”
Released in December 2025, Dhurandhar has been described by sections of the audience as strongly anti-Pakistan in tone, with critics arguing that it adopts a propagandist approach by focusing heavily on the theme of Pakistani-sponsored terrorism and its impact on India.
While the film has found vocal support among viewers who see it as hard-hitting and patriotic, it has also attracted criticism for its political framing.
Hrithik Roshan, while appreciating the film’s artistic execution, performances, and technical strengths, made it clear that he disagreed with the politics or political undertones embedded in the narrative.
He also emphasised that filmmakers carry a responsibility in shaping public narratives, especially when dealing with sensitive political and geopolitical subjects.
However, a segment of the audience and several social media commentators interpreted his remarks as being sympathetic to elements involved in terrorism or as reflecting a bias against a particular political ideology or party.
This interpretation led to Hrithik being subjected to online abuse, with critics hastily labelling him and his opinion as “anti-national.”
In the aftermath of the backlash, Hrithik Roshan shared a second, more appreciative review of Dhurandhar.
Many observers believe this was an effort to clarify his original position, underline his respect for the craft of filmmaking, and prevent further misinterpretation of his views.
Why Has Dhurandhar Become a Controversial Film?
Starring Ranveer Singh and Akshaye Khanna, Dhurandhar has increasingly been described as a propaganda-driven film, a label that has intensified public debate.
Responding to these accusations, the film’s casting director Mukesh Chhabra pushed back strongly, arguing that those branding the film as propaganda are themselves indulging in propagandist thinking.
The controversy surrounding Dhurandhar has sparked a wider discussion on the politics of storytelling, the thin line between nationalism and propaganda, and the role of critics and artists in questioning dominant narratives.
While some argue that the film crosses into overt political messaging, others defend it as a provocative cinematic commentary reflecting contemporary realities.
It is also important to recognise that the term “propaganda” is inherently subjective, often shaped by personal beliefs, ideological leanings, and individual worldviews.
The film’s portrayal of certain themes and events has undeniably fuelled the debate, but ultimately, interpretation remains in the hands of the audience.
