Prayagraj: The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A), popularly referred to as Triple-I-T, is at a crucial crossroads regarding its postgraduate programs.
Two of its specialized M.Tech courses — Biomedical Engineering and Communication Engineering, which once attracted a steady stream of aspirants, are now experiencing a visible slump in popularity.
In recent academic sessions, a significant number of seats in these programs have remained vacant, raising concerns about their future relevance.
Declining Appeal in Traditional Streams
According to institute sources, the steady decline in student interest is reflective of broader industry trends. While Biomedical and Communication Engineering once held the promise of rewarding career paths, the job market today is heavily skewed toward emerging technologies.
As a result, prospective students are increasingly prioritizing programs that offer direct pathways into high-demand sectors.
Institute’s Response: Revamping the Academic Model
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, IIIT-A has begun exploring a course restructuring strategy. The administration is considering two approaches:
- Rebranding and Updating Existing Programs — Modernizing the curriculum of Biomedical and Communication Engineering with interdisciplinary elements, making them more appealing and employment-driven.
- Introducing New-Age Courses — Launching specialized programs in rapidly growing fields to ensure graduates are industry-ready and competitive in the global job market.
High-Level Committee to Chart the Future
To guide this academic overhaul, the institute has constituted a four-member high-level committee led by Professor V.M. Gadre of IIT Bombay.
The committee has already undertaken preliminary reviews and is expected to submit its final recommendations within the next 40 days.
Depending on approvals, the revamped or entirely new courses could be introduced as early as the upcoming academic session, underscoring IIIT-A’s intent to remain adaptive and forward-looking.
Popular Choices Still Dominate
While these two M.Tech programs are struggling, core streams like Computer Science, Data Science, and Information Technology continue to dominate student preferences.
Industry experts point out that the surge in demand for professionals skilled in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, and Quantum Technologies is shaping these choices. Institutions like IIIT-A are now under pressure to recalibrate their offerings to align with these rapidly evolving career landscapes.
