Impersonation Call Turns Fatal: Chhattisgarh Man Dies by Suicide After Being Threatened by a Caller Posing as a Police Officer
A tragic incident in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir-Champa district has highlighted how fear created by impersonation and intimidation can have devastating consequences.
A 25-year-old man, Sanat Kumar Kashyap, allegedly ended his life after receiving a threatening phone call from an individual falsely claiming to be a police officer.
According to investigators, the disturbing chain of events began on Friday afternoon when Kashyap received a call from someone who introduced himself as a member of the police force.
The caller spoke in a harsh and authoritative tone, accusing Kashyap of having information about a young woman who had reportedly run away with a man.
The caller warned him that he must cooperate with the police investigation and provide details immediately or be prepared to face serious legal action.
The tone of the conversation reportedly created panic and confusion for Kashyap, who feared he might be implicated in a criminal matter.
Caller Was Not a Police Officer
As the police later discovered during their investigation, the person who made the threatening call was not a law enforcement official.
Instead, the caller was identified as Sachine Khare (30), a driver who allegedly pretended to be a policeman to pressure Kashyap into revealing information.
Authorities said Khare’s 21-year-old sister had recently gone missing, and the family suspected that she had eloped with a young man known to Kashyap.
Believing that Kashyap might have information about the couple’s whereabouts, Khare allegedly decided to contact him.
To make the call appear legitimate and intimidating, he reportedly impersonated a police officer from the Pantora Outpost under the Baloda Police Station, hoping that the threat of police action would compel Kashyap to reveal what he knew.
Threatening Call Created Fear
An audio clip of the phone conversation, which later surfaced during the investigation, allegedly captured the caller speaking in a stern and intimidating manner in the Chhattisgarhi language.
In the recording, the caller is heard demanding that Kashyap immediately disclose everything he knew about the missing woman. He also warned him to come to the police station if he failed to provide information over the phone.
The caller further threatened Kashyap by saying that he was already “dealing” with another person connected to the case and would take action against Kashyap next.
He reportedly warned him to think carefully before disconnecting his phone.
Fear and Anxiety Before the Tragedy
Police said the threatening call deeply disturbed Kashyap, who became extremely frightened after hearing the accusations and warnings.
Believing that he might be arrested or wrongly implicated in the matter, he reportedly experienced severe emotional distress.
Before taking the extreme step, Kashyap recorded a video message explaining the situation and sent it to some of his friends.
In the message, he reportedly described the phone call and expressed his fear over being accused in a case he believed he had no involvement in.
He also recorded the phone conversation itself, which later became crucial evidence for investigators attempting to trace the identity of the caller.
Police Investigation and Arrest
After Kashyap’s death came to light, police began examining the recordings and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The recorded phone call helped investigators identify the individual who had made the threatening call.
Police subsequently detained Sachine Khare, who was questioned regarding the incident.
Janjgir-Champa Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Pandey said the accused had allegedly threatened Kashyap and instructed him to appear at the police station.
“The caller intimidated him and asked him to report to the police station. Out of fear and mental pressure, the young man took the extreme step,” Pandey said.
During interrogation, the accused reportedly admitted to impersonating a police officer to extract information about his missing sister.
Following this, the police formally arrested Khare.
Legal Action Taken
An FIR has been registered against the accused under Section 204 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with impersonating a public servant.
Authorities also confirmed that a missing person report for Khare’s sister has been filed at the Kusmunda Police Station in Korba district, and efforts are ongoing to trace her whereabouts.
A Case Highlighting the Consequences of Intimidation
Police officials say the case underscores how false threats, impersonation, and psychological pressure can have severe consequences, particularly when a person believes they are being pursued by law enforcement.
Investigators are continuing their inquiry to determine whether additional charges may apply depending on further findings.
The incident has also prompted calls for greater awareness about misuse of authority and impersonation, which can cause panic and lead to tragic outcomes.
