Income Tax Raids on BSP MLA Umashankar Singh Enter Second Day; Crores in Cash, Key Documents Seized Across UP and Delhi
Lucknow/New Delhi/Varanasi: The Income Tax Department’s extensive search operations at properties linked to Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Umashankar Singh continued for a second consecutive day on Thursday, uncovering large amounts of unaccounted cash and crucial financial documents across multiple locations in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
Crores in Cash Found in Concealed Compartments
Officials reportedly recovered several crores of rupees in cash stored inside hidden cupboards that had been ingeniously constructed behind walls and furniture, including a divan.
The concealed storage spaces were designed in such a way that their existence would not be apparent upon routine inspection.
Sources indicate that investigators are probing possible collusion between the legislator and certain senior officials.
It is suspected that this nexus may have facilitated the award of large-scale government contracts. There are also indications that some officials may have made investments connected to these dealings.
Over ₹9 Crore Seized in Delhi; Evidence of Unaccounted Transactions
During searches at premises in Delhi, authorities have reportedly seized over ₹9 crore in cash along with several important documents.
Preliminary scrutiny of loose sheets, diaries, handwritten notes, and unregistered records suggests substantial unaccounted financial transactions.
Investigators are examining discrepancies between recorded figures and actual operations, including mismatches between declared income and expenditure.
Officials believe the documents may widen the scope of the investigation and potentially bring other prominent names in Uttar Pradesh under scrutiny.
Focus on Infrastructure and Mining Operations
The Income Tax Department conducted search and seizure operations at premises linked to CS Infraconstruction Limited, a civil infrastructure firm associated with the MLA.
The company is primarily engaged in road construction, stone aggregate mining, and the execution of government infrastructure projects.
Authorities are now expanding their probe to assess:
- Whether mining activities exceeded the approved lease area limits
- The actual scale of excavation versus officially declared output
- Possible financial irregularities in project execution
Officials confirmed that further analysis of seized documents is underway, and more details are likely to emerge in the coming days.
The company’s Managing Director is reportedly the MLA’s wife, Pushpa Singh. Her financial accounts are also being thoroughly examined as part of the investigation.
Raids Continue for Over 30 Hours Across Multiple Districts
In Varanasi and adjoining regions, the raids extended beyond 30 hours. Search operations were carried out at multiple locations in Robertsganj, Obra, and Chopan in Sonbhadra district, as well as Rasra in Ballia district — the MLA’s constituency.
At one location in Obra, officials deposited ₹20 lakh recovered during the search into a local branch of the State Bank of India.
According to departmental sources, at least six bank accounts linked to the network have been frozen so far.
Questioning of Associates and Family Members
At the MLA’s ancestral village residence in Khanwar (Ballia), officials interrogated his younger brother, Ramesh Singh, who is a director of Chhatra Shakti Infraconstruction Limited.
His mobile phone was reportedly seized, and company documents, laptops, and electronic devices were examined.
Searches were also conducted at:
- A hotel property in Rasra
- Residences of close associates in Athilapur and Daulatpur (Narhi)
- Construction offices in Robertsganj’s Imarti Colony
The main gate of the newly built residence named “CS House” in Khanwar village was sealed during the search, with nearly 50 officials involved in the operation under tight security arrangements.
Investigation May Broaden
Officials suggest that the findings so far point toward potential large-scale financial irregularities, particularly in infrastructure contracts and mining operations.
The probe could expand to include other political figures and bureaucrats if documentary evidence substantiates wider involvement.
The Income Tax Department has stated that the investigation remains ongoing and further disclosures are expected as scrutiny of seized materials progresses.
