India and Malaysia Agree to Deepen Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Sign Pacts in 11 Key Sectors

Kuala Lumpur: Agency. On the second and final day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Malaysia on Sunday, the two countries agreed to further strengthen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

India and Malaysia signed agreements covering 11 priority sectors, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, trade, investment, defence, the digital economy, energy, agriculture, education, and healthcare.

Malaysia also reaffirmed its support for India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council.

In a joint statement issued after talks between Prime Minister Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, both leaders underlined that India–Malaysia relations are rooted in shared historical experiences and democratic values.

The statement noted that bilateral ties have steadily strengthened since 1957 and were elevated to the level of a Strategic Partnership in 2024.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the expanding scope of cooperation and agreed to intensify engagement across traditional and emerging areas.

Expanding Cooperation Across New Areas

Both sides also agreed to promote bilateral trade in local currencies—the Indian rupee and the Malaysian ringgit—to facilitate smoother transactions and reduce dependence on third-country currencies.

India and Malaysia will additionally work together in areas such as public health, national security, technical and vocational education, disaster management, social security, and collaboration in films and digital content.

The leaders emphasized that enhanced cooperation in advanced technologies, supply chains, and people-to-people exchanges would further boost economic growth and strategic trust between the two countries, while contributing to stability and prosperity in the wider Indo-Pacific region.
