India, Pakistan Drawn Together in Hockey World Cup Pools; Tournament to Begin August 15

The much-anticipated men’s Hockey World Cup is set to deliver high-voltage clashes, with India and traditional rivals Pakistan placed in the same group for the upcoming tournament scheduled to commence on August 15 across Belgium and the Netherlands.

The announcement was made by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) following the official draw ceremony.

After the draw was conducted, the Indian men’s side was placed in Pool D alongside Pakistan, England, and Wales.

Meanwhile, the Indian women’s squad finds itself grouped with Olympic silver medallist China, South Africa, and England in their respective competition.

A total of 16 nations have secured qualification for the global event, and these teams have been divided into four groups consisting of four teams each.

Following the initial group stage, the top two teams from every pool will advance to the next phase, where the remaining eight sides will be split again into two groups.

The leading two teams from each of these second-stage pools will then move forward to the semi-finals. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments will run concurrently and follow an identical competition structure.

Having been placed in Group D, both Indian teams are scheduled to play their matches at the renowned Wagener Stadium in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

From a competitive standpoint, the Indian men’s team appears to have a relatively balanced group, with England being the only higher-ranked opponent.

Considering India’s strong recent performances against Pakistan, they are expected to be among the frontrunners to advance from Pool D along with England.

In contrast, Pools A and B in the men’s competition are being viewed as particularly challenging.

Pool A features the Netherlands, Argentina, New Zealand, and Japan, while Pool B includes Belgium, Germany, France, and Malaysia. Pool C consists of Australia, Spain, Ireland, and South Africa.

The draw ceremony was carried out by prominent figures from the hockey world, including former stars Naomie van As, Barbara Neelen, and Teun de Nooijer. Popular DJ La Fuente was also present and was named the Dutch Ambassador for the tournament during the event.
