India Urges Restraint and Dialogue After Turmoil in Venezuela, Voices Concern but Stops Short of Condemning US Action

A day after the United States launched a dramatic military operation in Venezuela and announced the capture of its President Nicolás Maduro, India on Sunday expressed “deep concern” over the unfolding situation, urging all parties to exercise restraint and resolve differences through peaceful dialogue.
Notably, New Delhi refrained from directly condemning the US action, maintaining a measured and cautious diplomatic stance.
In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the developments in Venezuela were being closely monitored. “Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern.
We are closely monitoring the evolving situation,” the statement said, underlining India’s focus on regional stability rather than assigning blame.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared the government’s position on the social media platform X, reiterating India’s emphasis on peace and humanitarian considerations.
India reaffirms its support for the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela. We call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region,” the statement added.
Focus on Indian Nationals
Amid the uncertainty, New Delhi said the Embassy of India in Caracas remains in constant touch with members of the Indian community in Venezuela.
The MEA assured that the embassy would continue to extend all possible assistance to Indian citizens in the country.
Following the fast-moving developments, the MEA also issued a travel advisory, urging Indian nationals to avoid non-essential travel to Venezuela.
Indians currently in the country have been advised to exercise extreme caution, limit their movements, and stay in close contact with the Indian embassy through official communication channels and emergency numbers.
US Claims and Global Ripples
The United States has claimed that President Maduro was captured during a nighttime operation and flown out of Venezuela after months of intensified political, economic,c and military pressure.
US President Donald Trump publicly announced the operation on social media hours after the attack, calling it a decisive move in Washington’s campaign against the Venezuelan leadership.
The announcement has sent shockwaves across Latin America and beyond, raising concerns about sovereignty, international law, aw and the precedent such actions may set.
Political Reactions in India
Within India, the US move has triggered sharp political reactions. Left parties strongly condemned Washington’s action, with CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby describing the military operation as an “act of international terrorism by US-led imperialism.”
He accused the US of violating international norms and destabilising a sovereign nation through force.
A Carefully Balanced Position
India’s response reflects a calibrated diplomatic approach — voicing concern, prioritising the safety of civilians and Indian nationals, and calling for dialogue, while avoiding confrontation with Washington.
As the situation in Venezuela continues to evolve, New Delhi appears intent on balancing its strategic interests with its long-standing support fthe or peaceful resolution of international disputes.
