Indian Army Launches ‘Operation SHIVA 2025’ to Secure Shri Amarnath Yatra Amid Heightened Threats
Massive Deployment, Cutting-Edge Surveillance, and Disaster Readiness Mark This Year’s High-Intensity Security Operation
In a powerful demonstration of preparedness and commitment, the Indian Army has officially launched ‘Operation SHIVA 2025’, a comprehensive and high-intensity annual security exercise aimed at ensuring the safe, smooth, and uninterrupted conduct of the revered Shri Amarnath Yatra.
The operation, launched on Friday, is a coordinated effort involving multiple security forces and administrative bodies.

This year’s operation carries even greater significance, coming in the wake of increased threats from Pakistan-backed proxy terrorist groups, particularly following a series of recent encounters and security operations in the Kashmir Valley.
Intelligence inputs and recent incidents have led to a heightened state of alert, prompting the Indian Army to initiate its most extensive Yatra security protocol yet.

Operation SHIVA 2025 has been meticulously planned in collaboration with the civil administration and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). Its core objective is to enhance security along both the northern (Baltal) and southern (Pahalgam) routes of the sacred pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine.
As part of this mega operation, over 8,500 troops have been deployed across various strategic points. These troops operate under a multi-layered counter-terror grid, bolstered by advanced surveillance systems, real-time monitoring, and emergency response capabilities.
The entire effort is designed to neutralize threats proactively and ensure a secure environment for the lakhs of pilgrims undertaking the Yatra.

One of the most significant additions to this year’s security apparatus is the deployment of a dedicated counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) grid, consisting of over 50 anti-drone systems. These are supported by electronic warfare assets capable of detecting, tracking, and neutralizing drone-based threats—an emerging tactic in modern asymmetric warfare.
Simultaneously, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) are conducting continuous surveillance missions, with live drone feeds being monitored to oversee the Yatra routes and the sacred cave area.

Beyond counterterrorism, Engineer Regiments are playing a vital role by constructing and repairing bridges, widening tracks, and enhancing disaster mitigation infrastructure.
The goal is not only to improve movement along the pilgrimage path but also to ensure safety in case of natural calamities such as landslides or flash floods.
On the medical front, arrangements are both extensive and meticulously planned. Over 150 medical personnel have been stationed across the Yatra zone.
The Army has set up two advanced dressing stations, nine medical aid posts, a 100-bed hospital, and 26 oxygen booths stocked with more than 2 lakh litres of oxygen to assist pilgrims, particularly at high altitudes where oxygen levels can drop drastically.

Signal units have also been deployed to maintain seamless communication, an essential requirement in remote terrains. Bomb detection and disposal squads remain on constant standby.
Additionally, helicopters are stationed nearby for rapid deployment in emergencies, be it for casualty evacuation or logistical support.

Provisions have also been made for logistical support, with emergency rations sufficient for over 25,000 people, Quick Reaction Teams, tent cities, water points, and heavy-duty equipment like bulldozers and excavators being kept at the ready. These assets not only support troops but also ensure pilgrim welfare in case of sudden climatic changes or road blockages.
