Indian Navy Personnel Held for Alleged Espionage Links with Pakistan’s ISI

In a major counter-intelligence operation, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Tuesday apprehended a 24-year-old sailor of the Indian Navy on suspicion of passing sensitive defence information to Pakistan’s spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

The detained serviceman, identified as Adarsh Kumar, also known by the nickname Lucky, hails from Agra in Uttar Pradesh. Officials said he was serving as a lance naik and was currently attached to the Southern Naval Command headquartered in Kochi, Kerala—one of the Navy’s key operational bases overseeing maritime security in the southern region.

According to senior ATS officers, the intelligence unit had received confidential information indicating that an individual connected to the armed forces was engaging in suspicious communications with a Pakistan-based intelligence operative.

Acting on these alerts, the agency initiated a detailed probe that involved electronic monitoring, technical tracking, and field-level surveillance.

During the course of the investigation, investigators reportedly traced several digital interactions and suspicious exchanges that eventually pointed towards Adarsh Kumar.

Officials alleged that the naval personnel had been in touch with an operative linked to the ISI and were allegedly transmitting sensitive information that could compromise national security.

Preliminary findings suggest that Kumar is suspected of sharing photographs and visual material related to critical naval infrastructure and assets, including images of Indian warships and other strategically important installations.

Authorities believe such material could reveal the Navy’s operational capabilities and deployment patterns.

Security agencies are now examining whether the accused acted alone or was part of a broader espionage network attempting to gather military intelligence from within India’s defence establishments.

Investigators are also analysing digital devices and communication records to determine the extent of the alleged information leak.

Following his arrest, Kumar was presented before a local court on Tuesday. The court subsequently ordered that he be sent to judicial custody, allowing investigators additional time to continue questioning and gather further evidence related to the case.

Officials stated that the probe remains ongoing and more details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over espionage attempts targeting India’s defence personnel and strategic installations.
