Inter Student Killed in Truck Hit-and-Run; Family Blocks Road in Protest as Driver Remains Absconding for 30 Hours

Prayagraj, Bahariya: Anger erupted in Bahariya after a 17-year-old Intermediate student was crushed to death by a speeding truck.

With neither the vehicle nor the driver traced even 30 hours after the accident, the grieving family, along with villagers, placed the body at Bahariya Chauraha and staged a road blockade, disrupting traffic on the Sikandra–Dandupur route for several hours.

Vaishnavi Maurya, also known as Anupam, daughter of Shailendra Kumar Maurya of Saraigani alias Jadipur under Bahariya police station, was a Class 12 student at RS Anand Hubaraji Sanwari Sanskar Intermediate College, Mailha, Bahariya. Her board examinations were scheduled to begin on February 18.

Her cousin, Pradeep Kumar Maurya, son of her paternal aunt and a resident of Devra Daulatpur under Mauaima police station, is also an Intermediate student.

His examination center had been allotted at Kaushalya Devi Ramarani Maurya Intermediate College, Dhamour. On Tuesday afternoon, Vaishnavi had accompanied her cousin Pradeep to visit his examination center.

While returning home, near the Eidgah at Dhamour turn in front of Saraigani village, a speeding truck rammed into their motorcycle.

The impact threw Vaishnavi into the middle of the road, and the truck ran over her before fleeing the scene. She died on the spot. Pradeep sustained serious injuries.

Within minutes, a crowd gathered at the site. However, the truck driver managed to escape with the vehicle amid the chaos. Based on a complaint lodged by Shailendra Kumar Maurya, the police registered a case against an unidentified truck driver.

On Wednesday, after conducting the post-mortem examination, police handed over Vaishnavi Maurya’s body to her family for the last rites.

The grieving family placed her body at the Bahariya Canal Chauraha and blocked the road in protest. Soon, hundreds of villagers from nearby areas joined them.

The protesters accused the police of attempting a cover-up and alleged negligence, stating that even after 36 hours,

Bahariya police had failed to apprehend the truck and its driver. The family also claimed that the police hurriedly sent Vaishnavi’s body for a post-mortem without informing them properly.

Upon receiving information about the road blockade, police officials rushed to the scene. Station House Officer of Bahariya, Brijesh Singh, arrived with a police force and tried to pacify the protesters, but tensions escalated, and slogans were raised.

ACP Phulpur Vivek Yadav also attempted to persuade the crowd, but without success. Naib Tehsildar Rajiv Kumar Shukla later reached the spot as well.

The family remained firm, declaring that they would not remove the body from the road until the truck driver and owner were produced before them.

Meanwhile, ACP Phulpur Vivek Yadav stated that the truck had been seized and that efforts were underway to locate the driver.

The vehicle was recovered from Gaddopur, and its owner is reportedly from Nawabganj. After 8 p.m., the villagers eventually agreed to disperse.
