Iran Signals Willingness for Dialogue but Warns Against Unequal Deals, Says Foreign Minister Araghchi
Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Friday said Tehran remains committed to diplomacy but will firmly safeguard its national rights, underlining that respect, equality, and mutual interest are non-negotiable for any lasting agreement.
In a message shared on X, Araghchi said Iran was approaching diplomatic engagements with caution, shaped by its experiences over the past year.
“Iran enters diplomacy with open eyes and a clear memory of recent events,” he wrote, adding that while the country is prepared to engage constructively, it will not compromise on its core rights.
The foreign minister stressed that promises made during negotiations must be honoured, cautioning against what he described as hollow assurances.
“Commitments must be fulfilled,” he said, asserting that equal footing, mutual respect and shared interests are not mere slogans but essential foundations for a durable agreement.
Araghchi’s remarks come at a time of renewed diplomatic activity involving Iran and the United States, including indirect discussions facilitated by Oman.
These talks are aimed at easing tensions and addressing longstanding disputes between Tehran and Washington.
Relations between the two countries have remained tense for years, marked by disagreements over Iran’s nuclear programme, economic sanctions and regional security issues.
Multiple rounds of negotiations in the past have failed to yield a lasting breakthrough, with each side accusing the other of not honouring commitments.
Iranian officials have consistently maintained that Tehran will not negotiate under pressure or accept unequal terms, and have demanded clear guarantees that any future agreement will be fully implemented.
Araghchi’s comments reinforce Iran’s stance that diplomacy must rest on balance, trust and fairness, lessons that Iranian leaders say have been drawn from earlier failed negotiations.
While expressing openness to continued dialogue, his remarks also reflect deep caution and scepticism about outcomes, particularly in light of setbacks over the past year.
The message from Tehran remains clear: Iran is willing to engage diplomatically, but only within a framework it considers just, respectful and reliable.
