Israel Claims Elimination of Iran’s Intelligence Chief in Overnight Strike, Signals Intensified Multi-Front Conflict
Israeli authorities have asserted that Tehran’s Intelligence Minister, Esmail Khatib, was killed in a late-night military operation carried out on Tuesday.
The reported strike marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict, further heightening tensions across the region.
Indicating a potential widening of the confrontation, Israel’s Defence Minister cautioned that the situation is expected to grow more severe and hinted at unexpected developments ahead.
As quoted by Al Jazeera, he stated that military operations would persist on two simultaneous fronts—one directed at Iranian targets and the other focused on Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group operating out of Lebanon.
Esmail Khatib was appointed as Iran’s Minister of Intelligence in 2021 during the presidency of the late Ebrahim Raisi.
Over the years, he held multiple high-ranking positions within Iran’s intelligence establishment as well as in offices linked to the country’s Supreme Leader. His academic background included advanced studies in Islamic jurisprudence.
In 2022, the United States Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Khatib, accusing him of overseeing cyber operations aimed at the US and its allied nations, particularly activities involving digital espionage and cyber-enabled threats.
Khatib’s association with Iran’s security apparatus dates back to the early years following the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
He reportedly joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in 1980 and was involved in intelligence-related roles from the outset, according to international reports, including those by the BBC.
He succeeded Mahmoud Alavi as Iran’s eighth Intelligence Minister. Scholarly assessments, including research by the Begin–Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, note that Khatib was mentored by prominent Iranian clerics such as Muhammad Fazel Lankarani, Naser Makarem Shirazi, and Mojtaba Tehrani, shaping his ideological and institutional outlook.
In his early career, Khatib became part of the foundational intelligence structure that later evolved into the IRGC Intelligence Organisation.
By November 1997, he had risen to head the Ministry of Intelligence’s regional office in Qom, a key religious and political hub.
Beyond his intelligence roles, Khatib also held influential administrative and security-related positions.
He served as the head of the security division at Astan Quds Razavi, the powerful foundation responsible for managing the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad.
Additionally, he held responsibilities linked to custodial and supervisory functions within Iran’s internal security framework.
The reported killing of such a senior intelligence figure is likely to have far-reaching implications, potentially intensifying the already volatile situation and raising concerns of further retaliatory actions across the Middle East.
