Israel Pounds Hundreds of Sites in Iran as West Asia Conflict Intensifies; Reports Surface of Iranian Leader Injured
The widening confrontation across West Asia entered a sharper and more dangerous stage on March 13 as Israeli fighter jets carried out extensive aerial assaults across Iran, targeting more than 200 locations linked to military infrastructure.
At the same time, the United States claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was wounded during the sustained bombardment campaign conducted jointly by Israel and the US.
Amid the heightened tensions, Iran’s Ambassador to India signalled that Tehran would ensure the safe transit of commercial ships headed toward India through the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.
However, disruptions linked to the conflict have already tightened global energy supply lines, with oil and fuel shipments through the narrow waterway facing severe constraints.
Speaking to journalists, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that Iran’s newly installed supreme authority, Mojtaba Khamenei, had suffered injuries during the nearly two-week-long wave of American and Israeli air operations against Iranian targets.
Hegseth asserted that the cleric was “wounded and possibly disfigured,” suggesting that his physical condition may have been severely impacted.
The US defence chief also rejected a recently circulated written message attributed to Khamenei, describing it as a sign of weakness.
According to him, the absence of any video recording or audio statement from the Iranian leader has raised doubts about his current condition. “He appears frightened, injured and in hiding.”
Hegseth remarked, fuelling speculation about the stability of Iran’s leadership structure and who might actually be directing the country during the conflict.
Meanwhile, developments on Iraqi territory have added another layer of uncertainty.
The US Central Command has launched an inquiry into a deadly aviation mishap involving two KC-135 Stratotanker refuelling aircraft that collided in mid-air over western Iraq. The incident killed four American crew members.
While certain armed militias operating in the region have claimed responsibility for bringing down the aircraft, the Pentagon has maintained that the crash occurred accidentally within what it described as “friendly operational airspace.”
Despite repeated warnings from Tehran that it could close the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most important energy corridors—the US military said it has so far found no definitive proof that Iran has succeeded in laying naval mines or fully blocking maritime movement through the channel.
In the information battle surrounding the conflict, Washington and Tehran have offered sharply contrasting narratives regarding the condition of Iran’s top leadership.
The US defence secretary has alleged that the Iranian leader is physically disfigured and politically weakened, whereas Iran’s state-controlled media outlets have referred to him only as a “war-injured” figure while avoiding detailed updates about his health.
On the military front, the Israeli Air Force reported that it conducted strikes on more than 200 Iranian targets within a span of 24 hours.
These operations reportedly focused on installations associated with ballistic missile production, missile launch platforms, and air defence systems located in central parts of Iran.
The situation in Iraq also deteriorated further as four American airmen died in the collision involving the aerial refuelling aircraft.
Defence officials confirmed that the second aircraft involved in the incident managed to land safely at an Israeli air base after sustaining damage.
Adding to the growing toll of international forces caught in the expanding crisis, a French soldier deployed in northern Iraq was also killed during operations linked to the escalating regional turmoil.
As military activity intensifies across multiple fronts—including Iran, Iraq, the Persian Gulf and surrounding airspace—global attention remains focused on the Strait of Hormuz, through which a substantial portion of the world’s crude oil shipments pass.
Any prolonged disruption in this corridor could have far-reaching economic and geopolitical consequences.
