A tragic incident unfolded inside a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Lamsang, located in Imphal West District, Manipur, on Thursday night. According to police reports, a CRPF jawan, who was on duty, suddenly opened fire on his colleagues, resulting in the deaths of two fellow personnel and injuries to eight others before taking his own life.

The unfortunate event occurred around 8 pm, as confirmed by Manipur Police. Authorities have categorized the case as a suspected incident of fratricide, which refers to the killing of fellow soldiers by one of their own. The motive behind the attack is yet to be determined, and investigations are underway to understand the circumstances that led to this tragic loss of lives.

In an official statement, Manipur Police addressed the incident, stating, “In an unfortunate incident that took place tonight at around 8 pm, a suspected case of fratricide occurred within a CRPF camp in Lamsang under Imphal West District. A CRPF jawan opened fire on his colleagues, killing two personnel instantly and injuring eight others. Following the attack, he turned the weapon on himself and ended his life using his service firearm.”

The personnel involved in the incident were part of the F-120 Company of the CRPF. The identities of the deceased and injured personnel have not been disclosed as authorities are working to inform their families and conduct further inquiries.

Following the incident, security forces and forensic teams rushed to the location to assess the situation and carry out initial investigations. The injured personnel were immediately transported to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Their current conditions remain undisclosed, but medical teams are reportedly providing necessary care to those affected.

Instances of fratricide within security forces, though rare, highlight the immense stress and mental health challenges faced by personnel deployed in high-tension areas. The CRPF, along with other central agencies, is expected to conduct a thorough probe into the matter to determine the factors that may have contributed to this devastating occurrence. Authorities may also review internal policies regarding stress management and mental health support systems for personnel stationed in sensitive zones.

Further updates on the investigation, including possible causes, official statements from the CRPF, and any preventative measures being considered, are expected in the coming days as officials continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the event.
