Joy Turns to Tragedy: Sisters Die Hours Before Wedding in a Rare and Baffling Incident

Jodhpur, Rajasthan: In a deeply tragic and unusual turn of events, a wedding celebration in a small village near Jodhpur transformed overnight into a scene of mourning when two sisters, who were about to be married the same day, were found dead under mysterious circumstances.

In the early hours of February 21, festivities were underway at the Rathore household in Manai village, located on the outskirts of Jodhpur.

The family had been preparing for a double wedding, as sisters Shobha Kanwar (25) and Vimla Kanwar (23) were set to marry two cousin brothers from another village.

Relatives, neighbours and friends had gathered, and the atmosphere was filled with music, laughter and the excitement typical of a wedding celebration.

Shortly before the ceremonies were scheduled to begin, the sisters reportedly retired to their rooms to take some rest.

However, within a short time, their elder sister Jahnvi discovered them lying motionless on the floor. Panic spread across the household as family members rushed to call a local doctor.

The women were immediately taken to a hospital in Jodhpur, but doctors there declared both sisters dead.

The sudden deaths stunned everyone present. What had begun as a day of celebration quickly turned into an unimaginable tragedy.

Police suspect that poisoning may have been involved, but investigators have so far not recovered any container or material that could confirm the source. Moreover, no suicide note was found at the scene, leaving the reason behind the deaths unclear.

Officials from the Soorsagar Police Station stated that forensic analysis will be crucial in determining the exact cause. Investigators are examining the sisters’ phone records and social media activity for possible clues.

Although their Instagram accounts were initially found deactivated, authorities have since managed to retrieve them for examination.

The two young women had worked hard to build their lives. Both had completed their graduation through determined effort and were employed as teachers at a private school located about seven kilometres from their village.

Their colleagues remember them as dedicated and cheerful individuals who supported their own education through their salaries while studying.

According to staff members at the school, the sisters had informed the management about their upcoming marriages in December and had even hosted a farewell gathering for colleagues earlier in February.

As the wedding date approached, however, some coworkers noticed that the sisters occasionally appeared emotional and anxious.

Family members, meanwhile, insist that they had not expressed any strong objections to the marriages.

Their mother, Soori Kanwar, firmly rejected suggestions that the sisters had been forced into the alliance, saying they never voiced any complaints to the family.

The marriages had been arranged in accordance with long-standing community traditions. The grooms, belonging to Jaimala village near Pokharan, had never met the brides, as such contact before marriage is discouraged in the community.

In an unexpected continuation of tradition, the weddings still took place later that day.

According to relatives of the groom, once the ceremonial haldi ritual is completed, cancelling a wedding is considered dishonourable in their Marwar community.

After discussions among elders, two alternative matches were arranged, and the two men married different women on the same day.

At the Rathore home in Manai, traces of the planned celebration remain. A wedding tent still stands in the courtyard, now sheltering mourners rather than guests.

Inside the verandah lie the gifts that were meant for the bride — a refrigerator, a double bed and large steel trunks — silent reminders of a celebration that never came to pass.

For the grieving family, the tragedy remains incomprehensible.

The sisters had recently gone to Jodhpur for wedding shopping and salon visits, invited friends and colleagues to their ceremony, and appeared to be preparing normally for the new phase of their lives.

With no clear explanation yet, investigators continue to search for answers in what has become a rare and deeply perplexing case — one in which a day meant to mark the beginning of two new lives ended instead in heartbreaking loss.
