KGMU Suspends Senior Faculty Member Amid Fresh Sexual Harassment Allegation

Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has suspended an Additional Professor after a resident doctor filed a complaint accusing him of sexual harassment.

The action was taken promptly on Thursday, a day after the complaint was formally lodged.

The development comes at a time when the university has already been under scrutiny following recent cases involving other medical professionals.

Earlier this month, a junior resident doctor, Rameezuddin, was arrested in Lucknow on allegations of forced religious conversion and sexual exploitation involving two women.

Around the same period, an intern was taken into custody by Qaiserbagh police on charges of allegedly sexually exploiting a nursing student under the pretext of marriage.

Confirming the suspension, KGMU spokesperson Dr. K. K. Singh stated that the university acted immediately after receiving the complaint to ensure that the accused faculty member does not influence the investigation.

According to him, the professor has been barred from entering the department so that the complainant can provide her statement to the Vishaka Committee without fear, pressure, or interference.

The matter has formally been referred to the committee, and an inquiry is now underway.

In her written complaint, the resident doctor alleged that the Additional Professor had been engaging in inappropriate conduct over several days.

She claimed he had been persistently stalking her, sending messages, and making unwelcome gestures both within the department and beyond working hours.

The latest allegation adds to the mounting controversies surrounding KGMU over the past month. Following earlier complaints, the institution has also faced public debate and political attention over claims of a so-called “love jihad” network operating on campus.

The issue intensified after a confrontation between a group led by BJP leader and Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission Vice-Chairperson Aparna Yadav and the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Soniya Nityanand.

The protest raised questions about the university administration’s handling of the earlier case.

In the case involving Rameezuddin, a woman resident doctor who had been in a relationship with him, alleged that he attempted to coerce her into religious conversion and concealed his marital status.

The matter reportedly surfaced after the woman attempted to take her own life on December 17. Subsequently, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Nityanand announced that the university had decided to expel him.

As investigations continue into the latest complaint, KGMU authorities maintain that due process will be followed and that steps are being taken to safeguard the integrity of the inquiry and the well-being of the complainant.
