Kremlin Keeps Close Watch on US ‘Golden Dome’ Missile Shield and Trump’s Greenland Moves

Russia has signalled heightened vigilance over the United States’ ambitious plan to roll out a massive missile defence system dubbed the “Golden Dome,” along with President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in securing Greenland.

The Kremlin on Sunday made it clear that Moscow is carefully studying Washington’s strategic intentions and potential security implications.

Speaking to Russian state television, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov raised pointed questions about the true purpose of the proposed shield and the nature of threats it is meant to counter.

He stressed that Russia’s military leadership would thoroughly analyse the programme as it develops.

“What kind of dome will it be? What threats will it be designed to defend against?” Peskov asked, adding that Russian defence experts would closely monitor every step of the US initiative.

The Golden Dome project, first ordered by Trump in January last year, envisions a vast network of more than a hundred satellites designed to detect, track and potentially intercept incoming missiles aimed at the United States.

The system is projected as a safeguard against threats from rivals such as China, Russia and other adversaries.

Trump has repeatedly described the shield as essential for protecting American territory, estimating the cost at around $175 billion.

He has said the project should be operational by the end of his current term in January 2029, drawing comparisons to former President Ronald Reagan’s long-ago vision of a space-based defence system that was never realised due to technological limitations at the time.

Alongside the missile defence plans, the Kremlin is also watching developments related to Trump’s push for greater US control over Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory under Denmark.

While Trump had earlier floated aggressive rhetoric, including economic pressure and even military options, he has recently softened his tone.

He announced he would not proceed with a proposed 10 per cent tariff on eight European countries and ruled out the use of force to acquire Greenland.

Russia has firmly rejected Trump’s claims that Moscow and Beijing could eventually seize Greenland if the US does not act.

Nevertheless, Trump has suggested that negotiations over American access to the strategically located territory are already underway.

In a recent interview with Fox Business Network, Trump said discussions were progressing and hinted at sweeping US privileges.

Speaking later on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, he added that the talks aimed at securing “total access” with no fixed timeline or expiration.

The Kremlin’s response reflects growing unease in Moscow over Washington’s expanding military ambitions in space and its strategic manoeuvring in the Arctic region — areas increasingly viewed as critical theatres in future global power competition.
