Lucknow Police Arrest Parents of KGMU Resident Doctor in Alleged Forced Religious Conversion Case

The Lucknow Police on Monday arrested the parents of a resident doctor of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in connection with an alleged case of forcible religious conversion linked to marriage.
The arrests mark a significant development in a sensitive investigation involving allegations of deception, sexual exploitation, and coercion.
According to police officials, the case centres on allegations that the accused doctor, identified as Rameezuddin, was involved in the forced religious conversion of a woman studying at Agra Medical College for marriage.
In a separate but related allegation, it is claimed that a resident doctor at KGMU was pressured to convert her religion so that she could marry him.
Arrest of the Parents After Magistrate Statements
Police said the accused doctor’s parents—Salimuddin, aged around 70, and Khadija, aged around 60—were taken into custody after detailed questioning. The couple was residing in a rented accommodation in the Old City area of Lucknow.
Senior police officers stated that the arrests were made after the statements of both alleged victims were recorded before a magistrate.
In their statements, the women reportedly alleged that the parents played an active role in exerting pressure on them to change their religion. One of the women has also alleged that she was subjected to a forcible miscarriage.
Based on these statements, police concluded that there was sufficient prima facie material to proceed against the parents under relevant legal provisions.
Accused Doctor on the Run, Reward Enhanced
Meanwhile, the main accused, resident doctor Rameezuddin, remains absconding. Police have increased the reward for him from ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 in an effort to secure information leading to his arrest.
Police teams have been dispatched to multiple locations to trace him after a non-bailable warrant was issued by the court.
Raids have already been conducted at his residence in Uttarakhand and at his ancestral house in Pilibhit, but so far, police have not been able to establish his whereabouts.
Officials said they are also preparing to approach the court seeking permission to attach the accused doctor’s property as part of the legal process.
Serious Criminal Charges Invoked
According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, the accused doctor faces multiple serious charges, including sexual exploitation of the two complainants, alleged forced religious conversion, criminal intimidation, and causing miscarriage without consent.
Police confirmed that the case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions dealing with sexual intercourse by deceitful means, criminal intimidation, and causing miscarriage without the woman’s consent, along with sections related to unlawful religious conversion.
Role of Cleric Under Verification
During the questioning of the arrested parents, police said the names of a Muslim cleric who allegedly solemnised the nikah, as well as a person who acted as a witness, came to light.
Investigators are now verifying their roles to determine whether they were aware of or complicit in the alleged acts. Police said further action would be taken strictly on the basis of evidence.
University Action and Origin of the Complaint
KGMU had earlier suspended the accused resident doctor after a formal complaint was lodged on December 23 by his colleague at the university.
In her complaint, the KGMU doctor alleged that she came in contact with another woman who identified herself as Rameezuddin’s wife.
According to the complainant, this woman told her that she had convertedto her religion for the marriage, which was solemnised in February last year.
This disclosure allegedly prompted the KGMU doctor to reflect on her own experience and approach the authorities, leading to the registration of the case.
Investigation Ongoing
Police have stressed that the matter is highly sensitive and that the investigation is being carried out with due care, strictly based on statements, documentary evidence, and legal procedures.
Officials reiterated that further details would be shared only as the probe progresses and facts are judicially established.
The case has once again brought the spotlight on alleged misuse of relationships for coercive conversion, an issue that continues to evoke strong legal, social, and political responses in Uttar Pradesh.
