Man shot dead by police in Bareilly after he killed in laws during peace meeting

What was meant to be a peaceful resolution of a family dispute turned into a horrifying tragedy in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, when a man allegedly butchered his mother-in-law and brother-in-law during a  Panchayat (community meeting), triggering panic, grief, and a dramatic police chase that ended in his death just hours later.

The accused, Afzar Khan, an autorikshaw driver, had been embroiled in a long-standing dispute with his wife and her family.

In a final attempt to resolve tensions, elders from both sides gathered in the Izzat Nagar area to mediate and bring about reconciliation. For a brief moment, it appeared that dialogue might succeed where anger had failed.

But beneath the surface, tensions simmered.

In the middle of the discussion, the situation spiraled out of control. In a sudden and brutal act, Khan allegedly attacked his in-laws with a sharp weapon. Chaos erupted as those present struggled to comprehend what was happening.

Within moments, his mother-in-law and brother-in-law lay lifeless, victims of a rage that had exploded without warning.

His wife, who was also present, was not spared. She sustained serious injuries in the attack and collapsed amid the bloodshed. Locals rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she continues to receive treatment.

As fear gripped the area, Khan fled the scene, leaving behind devastation and disbelief. The shocking killings during what was supposed to be a peace meeting sent ripples across the locality, with residents struggling to come to terms with the brutality.

Police were alerted immediately, and a manhunt was launched. Teams fanned out across the area, tracking the accused based on leads and local intelligence. The urgency intensified amid fears that he could carry out further violence.

Within hours, police located Khan. What followed was a tense confrontation. According to officials, the accused attempted to resist and posed a serious threat, forcing the police to open fire.

In the exchange, Khan was shot and killed, bringing a swift but dramatic end to the case.

Investigators believe he may have been planning another attack, possibly targeting his injured wife, which added to the urgency of the police response.

The incident has left the community shaken—not just by the brutality of the double murder, but also by how quickly a domestic dispute escalated into a chain of fatal घटनाएँ within a single day.

Now, as the police continue their investigation into the sequence of events, questions linger about the warning signs that were missed and the growing pattern of domestic conflicts turning deadly. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for postmortem, while authorities say a detailed probe is underway.

In Bareilly, a meeting meant to restore peace instead became a chilling reminder of how fragile it can be.
