Mathura Boat Tragedy: 10 Punjab Pilgrims Dead After Motorboat Capsizes in Yamuna River Near Vrindavan, Rescue Operations Continue

A tragic accident in Uttar Pradesh’s holy town of Vrindavan claimed the lives of at least ten pilgrims from Punjab after a motorboat carrying devotees capsized in the Yamuna River on Friday.

The incident occurred in the Vrindavan area of Mathura district, sending shockwaves among the local administration and the pilgrim community.

According to police officials, the ill-fated motorboat was carrying approximately 27 devotees, all residents of Ludhiana in Punjab, who had travelled to Mathura for religious purposes.

The group had reportedly been staying in the city for the past two days and had hired the motorboat to cross the Yamuna River to visit a temple located on the opposite bank.

The accident is believed to have taken place between the historically significant riverfront locations of Banshi Vat and Keshi Ghat, both prominent religious spots associated with the spiritual heritage of Vrindavan.

Boat Capsized After Hitting Pontoon Bridge

Preliminary findings suggest that the motorboat may have struck a pontoon bridge after the operator allegedly miscalculated the distance or navigation path.

The impact reportedly caused the vessel to overturn suddenly, throwing passengers into the river and triggering panic among the devotees onboard.

While the boat operator reportedly managed to swim to safety, many passengers struggled in the water. The sudden nature of the incident created difficulties for the passengers, several of whom were unable to reach the riverbank in time.

Rescue Operation Launched Immediately

Upon receiving information about the accident, local police and administrative authorities rushed to the site and immediately initiated rescue operations.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were deployed to assist in search and rescue efforts.

Emergency responders, along with local boatmen and divers, worked together to locate survivors and retrieve victims from the river.

Authorities also installed additional lighting arrangements to facilitate search operations during the night, as there were concerns that two to three persons might still be missing.

According to Rajeev Kumar Singh, Additional Superintendent of Police, Mathura, at least 15 passengers were rescued from the river and immediately taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Doctors attending to the rescued devotees stated that their condition is stable.

Casualties Confirmed by Police

Confirming the fatalities, Shailesh Kumar Pandey, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Agra Range, stated that the bodies of ten pilgrims have been recovered so far.

The deceased include five men and five women, all belonging to Punjab.

Authorities said that medical and administrative teams have been stationed at the site to coordinate rescue operations and ensure that injured persons receive prompt medical assistance.

Officials are also working to identify any missing individuals and provide support to affected families.

Pilgrimage Visit Turns Tragic

Vrindavan, situated in Mathura district, is one of the most revered religious destinations in India and attracts thousands of devotees throughout the year due to its association with Lord Krishna. Pilgrims often cross the Yamuna River by boat to visit temples located along the ghats.

Officials indicated that the devotees had hired the motorboat specifically to travel across the river as part of their pilgrimage itinerary.

However, the journey ended in tragedy when the vessel capsized mid-route.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have initiated a preliminary inquiry into the circumstances leading to the accident, including possible lapses in safety measures, overloading, or navigational errors by the boat operator.

Officials are expected to examine whether adequate safety protocols, including life jackets and passenger limits, were followed at the time of the incident.

Rescue operations were continuing at the time of reporting, with teams combing the river for any missing persons.

The administration has assured that all possible assistance will be provided to the victims’ families and that strict action will be taken if any negligence is found in the operation of the vessel.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding safety arrangements for boat services used by pilgrims in major religious destinations, particularly during periods of heavy tourist and devotional footfall.
