MHA Issues Nationwide Alert After West Asia Escalation; Protests Erupt in Several Indian Cities
In the wake of the recent US-Israel military action against Iran and the subsequent counterstrikes, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed all states and Union Territories to stay on high alert, cautioning against potential disruptions to public order across the country.
In a communication dated February 28, the Centre advised state administrations to keep a close watch on religious assemblies and sermons.
Officials indicated that particular attention should be paid to any individuals or groups attempting to deliver provocative speeches or incite gatherings in response to developments in West Asia.
The advisory warned that unfolding events in the region could trigger intense sentiments within sections of the population, especially during Friday prayers and other large congregations.
States have been instructed to step up intelligence gathering, reinforce security at vulnerable locations and diplomatic establishments, and ensure quick mobilisation of forces if tensions escalate into communal unrest.
According to a senior official, the move is a precautionary step aimed at identifying elements that may try to exploit the international crisis to disturb domestic harmony.
Authorities have stressed that the advisory is preventive in nature and part of standard security protocol during sensitive geopolitical developments.
Following the alert, police and intelligence units in several states — including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi — convened internal review meetings to assess the ground situation and identify potential trouble spots.
Meanwhile, confirmation of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death in the airstrikes triggered demonstrations in parts of India. In Ludhiana, Punjab, crowds gathered outside Jama Masjid to voice their opposition to Israel’s actions.
Protesters burned an effigy of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the demonstration.
Jammu and Kashmir also witnessed large-scale protests. In Srinagar, thousands assembled at Lal Chowk after news of Khamenei’s killing spread.
Participants raised slogans condemning the United States and Israel, and recited marsiya — traditional elegiac poetry — in mourning.
Lucknow saw similar scenes, particularly among members of the Shia community. Hundreds of men, women, and children dressed in black congregated at key locations such as Akbari Gate, Nakhas, Hussainabad, and adjoining areas.
Many carried portraits of Khamenei and expressed strong criticism of both Israel and the US.
As global tensions reverberate locally, security agencies remain on guard to prevent any spillover effects, even as authorities urge citizens to maintain calm and uphold communal peace.
