Middle East Engulfed in Expanding War as US–Israel Offensive Pounds Iran; Trump Claims Major Gains, Netanyahu Vows Campaign Not Over
The Middle East is witnessing one of its most dangerous military confrontations in decades as the United States and Israel intensify a sweeping military campaign against Iran, triggering retaliatory missile strikes, regional instability and fears of a wider war across West Asia.
What began as a coordinated offensive late last month has now evolved into a full-scale conflict involving air strikes, drone attacks and naval engagements stretching from Iran to the Persian Gulf and Lebanon.
The war, which entered its second week, has already reshaped the strategic balance of the region.
Major military installations in Iran have been targeted, global oil markets have been rattled, and several countries across the Gulf have been drawn into the crossfire as Iranian missiles and drones strike at American bases and allied infrastructure.
Massive Strikes and Expanding Battlefield
According to military briefings released during the conflict, U.S. forces have carried out strikes on more than 5,000 targets inside Iran, damaging missile bases, radar networks, air defence systems and naval assets belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.
More than 50 Iranian naval vessels have reportedly been destroyed or disabled during the opening phase of the campaign.
Israeli warplanes have simultaneously conducted extensive bombing raids on Iranian positions and on Iran-backed groups in Lebanon and Iraq.
Tehran and several major Iranian cities have witnessed repeated explosions and air-raid sirens as Israeli jets targeted military and strategic facilities.
Iran, however, has responded with a barrage of ballistic missiles and long-range drones directed at Israel, U.S. bases in Iraq and Gulf nations.
Several Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, have reported interceptions of drones and missile alerts as the conflict spreads across the region.
The confrontation has also severely disrupted energy markets. Iran has threatened to block oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and has targeted regional energy infrastructure, sending global crude prices sharply higher.
Trump’s Latest Remarks on the War
U.S. President Donald Trump, defending the military offensive, said the campaign had significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities and described the operation as a decisive blow to Tehran’s strategic ambitions.
Speaking about the ongoing battle, Trump claimed that Iranian forces had been “decimated” and asserted that the war was progressing rapidly toward its objectives.
He stated that American and Israeli forces had destroyed a large portion of Iran’s missile and naval capacity and insisted that the United States had been left with “no option but to strike” before Iran could threaten the entire Middle East.
The U.S. president also warned that if Iran attempted to block oil shipments or escalate attacks, Washington would respond with even stronger military action.
At the same time, he suggested that the campaign might not require a prolonged occupation, although he has not ruled out additional military measures if the situation deteriorates further.
Netanyahu Signals War Far From Over
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has adopted an even more uncompromising tone, declaring that Israel’s campaign against Iran is still in full swing.
In a recent address, Netanyahu said the offensive had already inflicted heavy damage on Iran’s leadership and military infrastructure but warned that the operation would continue until Israel’s security objectives were achieved.
He stated that Israel was “not done yet” and that the current offensive aims at breaking Iran’s strategic capabilities and weakening its ruling establishment.
Israeli officials have repeatedly argued that the war is intended to dismantle Iran’s missile programme and prevent it from emerging as a nuclear-armed power—an objective Israel considers an existential necessity.
New Supreme Leader and Iran’s Defiant Stand
The conflict has taken a dramatic turn inside Iran itself following the death of long-time Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, reportedly killed during the initial phase of the joint strikes.
His son Mojtaba Khamenei has now been elevated to the position of Supreme Leader, consolidating power within the Iranian political establishment.
Under the new leadership, Iran has adopted a hard-line posture. Tehran has declared that negotiations with the United States are no longer on the table and has vowed to continue retaliatory strikes against Israeli and American targets.
Iranian military commanders have warned that if the attacks persist, they could halt the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most critical energy corridors—and intensify missile attacks across the region.
Are U.S. Ground Troops Being Deployed?
So far, the United States has relied primarily on air strikes, naval operations and long-range missile attacks, with American forces operating from bases and aircraft carriers across the Middle East.
While there has been no confirmed large-scale deployment of U.S. ground combat troops inside Iran, officials have indicated that special operations missions remain under consideration.
Reports suggest Washington is exploring limited special-forces operations to secure strategic assets, including sensitive nuclear materials.
At the same time, thousands of American troops stationed across the Gulf region remain on high alert as Iranian missiles and drones continue to target U.S. bases in Iraq and nearby areas.
Region on Edge
The war has already caused widespread humanitarian and economic disruption.
Hundreds have been killed across Iran, Israel and neighbouring territories, while hundreds of thousands of civilians have been displaced in parts of Lebanon and other conflict-affected zones.
International efforts to broker a ceasefire have so far made little progress. With both sides signalling that the campaign is far from over, analysts fear the confrontation could escalate into a prolonged regional war involving additional powers and proxy groups across the Middle East.
For now, the region remains on edge as the United States, Israel and Iran brace for the next phase of a conflict that is rapidly reshaping the geopolitical landscape of West Asia.
