Mithun Manhas Set to Take Charge as Next BCCI President

Former Delhi cricketer Mithun Manhas is poised to become the next president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), according to sources familiar with the developments.

During a key meeting in Delhi, Manhas was selected as the candidate for the top post, marking a significant transition in the governing body of Indian cricket.

Manhas, who has a rich cricketing and administrative background, previously served as the convener of the North Zone for the Duleep Trophy, was part of the support staff for IPL franchise Gujarat Titans, and currently holds the position of administrator for the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA).

Stellar Cricketing Career

On the field, Manhas boasts an impressive record. Over a career spanning 18 years, he played 157 first-class matches, amassing 9,714 runs. His vast experience in domestic cricket is expected to bring valuable insights into BCCI governance and the development of cricket across India.

The incumbent president, Roger Binny, stepped down due to the BCCI’s 70-year age cap rule for office bearers, paving the way for fresh leadership.

Surprise Pick and the Administrative Line-up

Manhas’ selection came as a surprise to many, as other former India cricketers, including Harbhajan Singh and Raghuram Bhatt, were also considered strong contenders.

Sources indicate that the current BCCI secretary, Devajit Sakia, will continue in his role, while Rajeev Shukla retains the position of vice-president. Shukla, a veteran politician, has completed five years in this capacity.

For other key positions, former Karnataka cricketer Raghuram Bhatt is expected to take over as treasurer, and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia from the Chhattisgarh Cricket Sangh is likely to be appointed joint secretary.

Arun Dhumal appears set to continue as IPL chairman, although the BCCI is consulting legal advisors to determine if he must undergo a cooling-off period, given that he previously served as treasurer for three years before taking the IPL post.

Apex Council and IPL Governing Council Elections

The BCCI is also preparing to hold fresh elections for the Apex Council and IPL Governing Council. Among the potential members is Jaydev Shah, son of former BCCI officer bearer Niranjan Shah. Jaydev has a commendable cricketing background, having played 120 first-class matches for Saurashtra.

As per the official circular sent to all state associations, the deadline for members to file nominations was September 12. Candidates may withdraw their names until September 23, while the election is scheduled for September 28.

This leadership transition is being closely watched by the cricketing fraternity, with expectations that the new BCCI president will strengthen governance, streamline operations, and promote the growth of cricket at grassroots and professional levels.
