Modern Polyhouse for Guava Cultivation Launched in Khusrobagh, Prayagraj
Prayagraj: In a major boost to horticulture and high-quality fruit production, a state-of-the-art polyhouse dedicated to guava cultivation is being established in Khusrobagh, covering an area of 500 square metres.
This ambitious initiative is being carried out under the supervision of the Department of Horticulture to strengthen guava farming, enhance fruit quality, and revive the legacy of the celebrated Allahabadi guava.
Guava, renowned for its nutritional value, acquires even greater prestige when associated with the Allahabadi variety, which enjoys widespread popularity not just across India but also among Indians abroad.
The demand for this fruit—especially the distinct varieties with red skin or red pulp—has been consistently high, with relatives and friends often requesting it from Prayagraj.
Recognizing this, the horticulture department has invested several lakhs of rupees in constructing a modern polyhouse with white-sheet covering, designed to provide optimal growing conditions.
Nursery for Premium Guava Saplings
Inside the polyhouse, a specialized nursery will nurture different species of guava with scientific precision. Saplings of renowned varieties such as Safeda, Dhawan, Sebia, and Allahabadi will be carefully raised under controlled conditions.
The initiative aims to produce more than 15,000 healthy guava plants, ensuring they are disease-resistant, robust, and capable of yielding high-quality fruits when transplanted into orchards across the region.
According to V.K. Singh, Horticulture In-Charge of Khusrobagh, the polyhouse is designed to meet the growing demand among farmers and fruit growers for premium saplings. By adopting modern cultivation techniques, the nursery will significantly contribute to improving production standards, fruit quality, and the profitability of guava orchards.
Reviving the Glory of Allahabadi Guava
Historically, areas like Kaushambi in Prayagraj were major producers of prized Allahabadi guava varieties. However, in recent years, production has declined due to various challenges.
With the establishment of this polyhouse, the government aims to revive the guava-growing belt, restoring its past glory and meeting both domestic and international demand.
The initiative not only strengthens the local economy but also reinforces Prayagraj’s reputation for producing some of the best guavas in India and abroad. For many, the Allahabadi guava is more than a fruit—it is a symbol of regional pride, agricultural excellence, and cultural heritage.
Once the saplings mature, they will yield guava trees capable of producing premium fruits, ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality Allahabadi guavas, delighting both farmers and consumers alike.
