Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh:
In a deeply disturbing incident that has shaken public confidence in police safety, a woman was allegedly shot dead by her husband inside a police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district on Monday.

The killing, carried out in full view of relatives and within the precincts of law enforcement, has led to the arrest of the accused and the suspension of two police personnel for gross negligence.

Police identified the victim as Soni Yadav (28). Her husband, Anoop Yadav (30), was immediately taken into custody after the shooting. Officials confirmed that two policemen on duty at the time have been placed under suspension for failing to prevent the crime.

From Complaint to Catastrophe

According to the police, Anoop Yadav, a farmer by occupation, had earlier approached the police claiming that his wife had left home with another man, described as a distant relative.

Acting on his complaint, a case was registered at Pali Police Station under BNS Section 87, which relates to kidnapping, abduction, or inducing a woman to compel marriage.

On Sunday, the police traced Soni, who categorically stated that she had left of her own free will. She was asked to report to the police station on Monday, where her medical examination was to be conducted and her formal statement recorded.

Gunfire Inside the Police Compound

Police officials said that on Monday, Soni was standing near the police station mess, speaking with her husband, their 14-year-old son, her sister, and her uncle. Without warning, Anoop allegedly pulled out a country-made pistol he had been carrying and fired at her from behind.

The sudden gunshot caused panic inside the police premises. Soni collapsed on the spot and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors fought to save her life. She later succumbed to her injuries.

The accused was arrested at the scene, and the firearm used in the killing was seized from his possession.

Chilling Motive, Startling Lapses

A senior police officer said that when questioned about the motive behind the killing, Anoop allegedly offered a chillingly casual response: “Nothing felt right.”

Superintendent of Police, Hardoi, Ashok Kumar Meena, said that the Additional Superintendent of Police has been directed to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the sequence of events and the serious security lapses that allowed an armed man to enter and remain inside the police station.

Taking strict note of the incident, the SP suspended the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Vikram Chaudhary, and a woman constable, Sanjana Rajput, who had been assigned to ensure the woman’s safety.

Probe Continues

Police said the man with whom Soni had allegedly gone earlier is still untraceable, and efforts are underway to locate him as part of the wider investigation.

The killing—executed inside a police station, despite the presence of officers and assigned protection—has raised grave questions about procedural failures, weapon checks, and the safety of women who turn to law enforcement for protection.
