Nation Mourns as Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar Dies in Tragic Baramati Plane Crash
A wave of grief swept across the country on Wednesday following the tragic death of veteran Maharashtra leader and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in an aircraft crash at Baramati airport.
The plane, which was carrying Pawar along with four others, went down while attempting to land in the morning hours.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), there were no survivors in the devastating incident. Ajit Pawar was 66 years old.
Leaders from across the political spectrum expressed deep sorrow over the sudden loss of the senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, who was a key ally in Maharashtra’s ruling NDA government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to convey his condolences. In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister said he was deeply saddened by the tragic crash and extended his sympathies to the families of all those who lost their lives.
“My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones in this tragedy. I pray for strength and courage for the bereaved families in this hour of immense grief,” the Prime Minister said.
Remembering Ajit Pawar as a leader deeply connected with the people, PM Modi highlighted his tireless dedication to public service and his strong grassroots presence.
“He was widely respected for his hardworking nature and commitment to serving the people of Maharashtra.
His administrative understanding and passion for uplifting the poor and marginalized were truly remarkable. His untimely demise is extremely shocking and painful,” the Prime Minister added, offering condolences to Pawar’s family and supporters.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed profound shock and sorrow over the tragic news.
“Throughout his long political journey, Ajit Pawar remained dedicated to the development and prosperity of Maharashtra.
He was known for his compassion towards the people and his unwavering devotion to public service. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, well-wishers, and admirers,” Singh said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah described Pawar’s death as a personal loss and said the news had deeply distressed him.
“For over three and a half decades, Ajit Pawar ji devoted himself wholeheartedly to the welfare of every section of society in Maharashtra.
Our meetings were always filled with meaningful discussions about public welfare. His passing is not only a great loss to the NDA family but also a personal loss to me,” Shah said.
Expressing solidarity with the grieving family, Shah added, “The entire NDA stands firmly with the Pawar family in this moment of sorrow. May the departed soul find peace at the divine feet of God.”
Leaders from the Opposition also joined in mourning the sudden demise of the senior leader.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge termed the incident deeply shocking and heartbreaking.
“This is an untimely loss of a leader who still had a long political journey ahead. No words can truly capture the pain the family must be going through at this difficult time. I extend my deepest condolences to the Pawar family, his supporters, and admirers,” Kharge said.
He added that Ajit Pawar would be remembered as an experienced and capable leader who served the people of Maharashtra in various constitutional roles with sincerity and wisdom.
West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee expressed both grief and concern over the incident, calling for a thorough investigation into the crash.
“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing away of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and his co-passengers in the horrific plane crash at Baramati this morning.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, including his uncle Sharad Pawar, and to all his friends and followers,” Banerjee said.
She further emphasized the need for a proper probe into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti also expressed her sorrow.
“I am deeply shocked and saddened by reports of the tragic private plane crash that claimed the life of Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, along with others.
My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families. May the departed souls rest in peace,” she said.
