Nepal Turns a Page: Sushila Karki Interim Prime Minister, Promises Stability and Renewal
After weeks of turmoil, Nepal has entered a new phase in its political journey, with former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Sushila Karki, stepping in as the country’s interim Prime Minister.
At 73, Karki represents not just experience but also a bridge between a painful past and the promise of a brighter, more accountable future.
Addressing the nation shortly after assuming office, Karki made it clear that neither she nor her team was motivated by power.
“My team and I are not here to taste power. We won’t stay for more than six months. We will hand over the responsibility to the new parliament.
We won’t succeed without your support,” she said, striking a tone of humility and responsibility.
Her government’s immediate agenda is to stabilize the country, heal its wounds, and pave the way for fresh elections. Karki praised the unprecedented Gen-Z anti-corruption protests that swept the nation and toppled the KP Sharma Oli government, calling the movement a “historic transformation.”
She paid tribute to the 72 people who lost their lives—including 59 protesters, 10 prison inmates, and three police officers—declaring them martyrs.
Their families will receive 1 million Nepali rupees each as compensation, while those injured will be given medical care and financial assistance.
Karki acknowledged that while the protests embodied the will of the people, incidents of vandalism and property destruction raised serious concerns.
“Looking at what happened in the name of protests, it seems as if it was executed in a planned way, raising questions of a conspiracy,” she remarked, vowing to investigate thoroughly. At the same time, she assured that victims of property damage would be supported through compensation, soft loans, or other relief measures.
Recognizing that Nepal is in the midst of an economic crisis, the interim Prime Minister emphasized that her government’s focus would be on reconstruction, economic stability, and restoring public confidence.
She reminded the people that this transitional phase is not about political gain but about rebuilding the nation’s foundations on fairness, transparency, and accountability.
In a remarkable twist, it was the young protestors themselves—Nepal’s “Gen-Z”—who pushed for Karki’s leadership, seeing her as a credible figure capable of guiding the country through turbulent waters into calmer seas.
With the cabinet now entrusted to steer Nepal until elections are held, the country appears poised to close a troubled chapter and embark on a new, hopeful journey toward democratic renewal.
The message is clear: Nepal’s future lies in the hands of its people, and a new dawn is already breaking on the horizon.
