Nepal Withdraws Social Media Ban After Deadly Youth-Led Protests

1

In a dramatic reversal, the Nepal government on Monday lifted its controversial ban on social media platforms following days of unrest that left at least 19 people dead and more than 300 injured, according to reports by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

The decision came after an emergency Cabinet meeting, where Minister for Communication, Information and Broadcasting Prithvi Subba Gurung confirmed that the restrictions were being rolled back.

Gurung said the Ministry of Information had directed concerned agencies to begin the process of restoring access to the blocked platforms.

“The Cabinet has decided to resume social media sites in response to the demands raised by ‘Gen Z’. We appeal to the youth groups to end their protests and return to normal life,” Gurung stated.

How the Ban Sparked Fury

The government had just three days earlier announced a sweeping ban on 26 major platforms, including Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), claiming that these companies had failed to register with Nepal’s authorities.

The move was widely seen by critics and young people as an attempt to silence voices of dissent at a time when public frustration with corruption and governance was already high.

Instead of curbing discontent, the ban ignited nationwide anger, with thousands of students and young professionals taking to the streets under the banner of the so-called “Gen Z movement.” Protesters argued that the ban was a direct attack on their freedom of expression and digital rights.

Violence at the Heart of Kathmandu

The protests turned violent on Monday when demonstrators forced their way into the parliament compound in Kathmandu. Police responded with heavy-handed measures, including the use of tear gas, water cannons, and even live ammunition, eyewitnesses told PTI. The clashes left dozens injured and heightened tensions in the capital.

The unrest, coupled with mounting casualties, ultimately forced the government’s hand, leading to the withdrawal of the ban.

What Lies Ahead

While the lifting of restrictions has been welcomed by Nepal’s youth, questions remain about the government’s handling of the crisis and whether similar measures could be imposed in the future. For many, the episode has underscored the growing power of youth-led digital activism in shaping the country’s political landscape.
