Netanyahu Claims Elimination of Senior Iranian Leaders, Signals Deeper Israel–US Coordination
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Tuesday that Israel had carried out targeted overnight operations resulting in the death of a senior Iranian figure, Ali Larijani, intensifying already high tensions in the region.
The statement followed a similar assertion made earlier by Israel’s defence leadership, though Iranian authorities have not officially verified Larijani’s reported killing.
Larijani had been a key figure in Iran’s strategic establishment, previously serving as a chief nuclear negotiator and maintaining close ties with the country’s top leadership.
In addition to Larijani, Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces also eliminated Gholam Reza Soleimani, a prominent Iranian commander who headed the Basij, a volunteer paramilitary wing affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
He described both figures as central pillars of Iran’s internal security structure and emphasized that the operations were part of a broader campaign involving coordinated aerial assaults using fighter jets and unmanned systems.
Speaking through a video message shared online, Netanyahu portrayed the strikes as part of an effort to weaken Iran’s governing system.
He argued that sustained pressure could eventually empower Iranian citizens to challenge and potentially replace the current leadership.
However, he acknowledged that such a transformation would be gradual and complex rather than immediate.
The Israeli leader also disclosed that he held discussions with US President Donald Trump a day earlier, highlighting ongoing collaboration between Israeli and American military forces.
According to Netanyahu, this cooperation extends across both aerial and naval domains, particularly in strategic areas around the Gulf region.
He further indicated that Israel is assisting US operations through a combination of overt and covert measures designed to intensify pressure on Iran.
While hinting at additional undisclosed strategies, Netanyahu suggested that more unexpected developments could unfold, underscoring that not all operational details would be made public.
Reflecting on past events, Netanyahu referenced the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which marked the beginning of a prolonged conflict in Gaza.
He contrasted Israel’s vulnerable situation at that time with what he described as its current position of strength, crediting military capability and international alliances for the shift.
Emphasizing the partnership with Washington, Netanyahu stated that the United States is standing firmly alongside Israel in the ongoing confrontation.
He portrayed this alliance as a major strategic advantage, noting the combined military strength, technological capabilities, and coordinated efforts between the two nations.
In his concluding remarks, Netanyahu urged citizens to remain resilient and dismiss pessimistic narratives.
He framed the current moment as one of significant achievement despite mounting threats, pointing to Israel’s defence forces, air power, and alliances as key factors sustaining its position amid escalating regional challenges.
