Nowgam Police Station Blast Triggered During Forensic Sampling; 9 Dead as Probe Intensifies
The Union government has stated that the deadly explosion inside Nowgam police station in Jammu and Kashmir late Friday night occurred during an ongoing forensic sampling process.
The blast claimed at least nine lives, with officials warning that the toll could increase.
According to a senior source, forensic experts had been conducting sample collection for two consecutive days, preparing to submit their findings late Friday.
The explosion erupted in the section of the police station where explosives seized from the Red Fort blast–linked terror module were being stored in an open, secured area.
Prashant Lokhande, Joint Secretary (J&K Division) at the Ministry of Home Affairs, stated:
“Yesterday at around 11:20 pm, an unfortunate accidental blast occurred inside Nowgam police station. A large cache of explosive materials and chemicals recovered during the probe of a terror module had been kept safely in an open yard.”
He added that all investigative teams were functioning in a coordinated, scientific manner and that forwarding chemical samples for forensic analysis was part of the standard operating procedure.
“Because of the massive quantity of recovered material, the sampling had been ongoing for the last two days. During this process, an accidental explosion occurred at about 11:20 pm,” Lokhande noted.
He emphasized that the cause of the accident is under investigation, urging the public to avoid speculation. The government, he said, stands firmly with the families of those who died in this tragic incident.
A senior J&K Police officer described the blast as immensely powerful, saying its shockwave was felt up to 30 km away. The explosion engulfed the police station and nearby vehicles in flames, damaging personnel barracks and injuring several officers.
The Nowgam police station plays a central role in the ongoing investigation that recently helped unravel a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) interstate terror network.
The probe, which began with JeM-linked posters in the locality, led officers from Kashmir to Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, exposing the module’s operations.
During the raids, the J&K Police seized over 350 kg of ammonium nitrate — part of a larger haul of nearly 2,900 kg of suspected explosive material, including potash, phosphorus, reagents, flammable substances, electronic circuitry, batteries, wiring, remote controls, timers, and metal sheets.
