In a major stride toward technological self-reliance, Odisha on Saturday marked a historic milestone as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi laid the foundation stone for India’s first end-to-end silicon carbide semiconductor manufacturing plant.

The state-of-the-art facility, being established by SiCSem Private Limited near Bhubaneswar, underscores India’s renewed push to lead in advanced electronics manufacturing and fulfil its vision of a self-dependent tech ecosystem.

Backed by Union Cabinet approval, the project brings an investment of ₹2,067 crore and is expected to generate nearly 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

This cutting-edge plant will produce Silicon Carbide-based chips—critical components for defence systems, electric vehicles, high-speed chargers, railways, data centres, consumer appliances, and solar power infrastructure.

With an annual capacity of 60,000 wafers and 96 million packaged units, the facility places India among the select nations capable of manufacturing advanced compound semiconductors.

SiCSem has partnered with UK-based Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd. to develop this integrated fabrication ecosystem in Bhubaneswar’s Info Valley.

Complementing the initiative, a ₹64-crore Research and Innovation Centre is coming up at IIT-Bhubaneswar, while Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has sanctioned ₹5 crore from his MPLAD fund to support the ‘NaMo Semiconductor Laboratory’ at the institute.

Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CM Majhi said the project reflects India’s journey toward semiconductor sovereignty—powered by the India Semiconductor Mission and the Centre’s investment in futuristic technologies.

Officials confirmed that 23 acres of land have been allotted for the facility by the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation.

As India accelerates its ambition to become a global semiconductor hub, Odisha’s breakthrough signals a new era of innovation, high-value manufacturing, and nation-first technological progress—strengthening the country’s resolve to make in India, innovate in India, and lead the world in next-gen technology.
