Oil-Soaked Rain and Black Fumes Blanket Tehran After Israeli Airstrikes on Iranian Energy Facilities

Residents of Tehran, the capital of Iran, woke up on Sunday to an unusual and alarming scene as dark, smoke-laden clouds hung over the city and an oily residue reportedly fell with the rain.

The strange phenomenon followed an intense overnight bombardment that targeted major oil installations located around the capital.

According to reports, the unusual rainfall appeared to contain traces of petroleum residue, likely caused by massive fires and explosions at oil facilities struck during the aerial assault.

The burning infrastructure reportedly released thick plumes of smoke and hydrocarbons into the atmosphere, which later mixed with rainfall and descended over several neighbourhoods.

Authorities in Tehran warned residents about deteriorating air quality and the potential health risks caused by the heavy pollution.

The city administration urged citizens to remain cautious and advised people to wear protective masks due to the hazardous fumes spreading across the metropolitan area.

Israeli Air Force Targets Energy Infrastructure

The environmental fallout followed a large-scale aerial operation carried out by the air force of Israel, which reportedly struck several oil refineries and energy installations in and around Tehran.

According to a report broadcast by CNN, the primary targets of the operation were oil facilities situated to the south and west of the Iranian capital.

The bombardment triggered fires at multiple petroleum storage sites, releasing dense clouds of black smoke that spread across the sky above the city.

Residents in various districts later reported rainfall that appeared contaminated with oily particles and soot.

Multiple Oil Facilities Reportedly Hit

Iranian media outlets confirmed that several energy facilities suffered damage during the strikes.

According to the Iranian news agency FARS News Agency, at least four oil storage depots and crude transfer stations located in Tehran and the neighbouring province of Alborz were hit during the Israeli attack on Saturday.

The agency also reported casualties linked to the assault. Four tanker truck drivers who happened to be present at one of the fuel transfer centres when the strikes occurred were killed in the explosions.

Escalation on Ninth Day of War

The developments came on the ninth day of the escalating military confrontation involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

During the same period, Iran reportedly launched retaliatory strikes that caused damage to a desalination facility in Bahrain.

Reports indicate that drones and missiles were directed toward the Gulf kingdom, where the United States operates the strategic United States Fifth Fleet naval headquarters.

Although Iranian projectiles had been targeting locations in Bahrain since the early stages of the conflict, the alleged strike on a desalination plant marked the first time that water infrastructure was directly affected in the Gulf state.

Iran Accuses US of Escalating Conflict

The incident followed an earlier attack carried out by the United States on Qeshm Island, an Iranian island in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz that hosts an important desalination facility.

Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, stated that the strike on the island had severely disrupted water supplies to nearly thirty nearby villages.

He warned that the United States had set a dangerous precedent by targeting water infrastructure during the conflict.

According to Araghchi, the destruction of the desalination facility significantly affected the availability of drinking water in the surrounding communities.

Rising Casualties in Iran

Meanwhile, the human toll from the ongoing conflict continues to climb. Iranian officials reported that an additional twelve people were killed on Sunday as Israeli strikes continued across the country.

With these latest casualties, the death toll from Israeli bombardments in Iran has reportedly crossed 300 fatalities since the conflict began.

Israeli forces have also expanded military operations beyond Iran’s borders. Reports indicate that Israeli attacks targeted positions of Iranian-aligned forces in southern Lebanon, despite a ceasefire agreement that had been in place since November 2024.

Conflict Triggered by Joint Strike

The current crisis erupted on February 28, 2026, when Israel and the United States launched a coordinated military offensive against Iran.

The initial strikes targeted key Iranian nuclear installations, military infrastructure and leadership facilities.

In response, Iran carried out retaliatory attacks on diplomatic missions and military assets associated with the United States and Israel across several Middle Eastern countries.

Global Economic Impact

The ongoing exchange of strikes has begun to affect global markets and energy supplies.

The closure and disruption of shipping through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most important oil transit routes — has caused significant turbulence in energy markets.

With tanker movement severely curtailed due to the ongoing hostilities, crude oil prices have surged sharply, reaching levels not seen since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The continued instability in the region has raised fears of prolonged supply disruptions and further volatility in global oil markets.
