Opener Spot to Be Decided on Feb 7 as SKY Lays Out India’s T20 World Cup Blueprint

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has confirmed that the much-debated opening slot in the national side will be decided on February 7, calling it a key part of India’s long-term World Cup planning.

Speaking after the series against New Zealand, SKY revealed that the return of Tilak Varma could further complicate team selection, as every member of the 15-man squad is pushing for a place in the playing XI.

“Tilak is batting really well and looking sharp. Once he’s fully back, it will definitely add to the selection dilemma. All 15 players are genuine contenders for the XI,” SKY said.

“The final decision between Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson for the opening role will be revealed on February 7.”

A Flexible World Cup Combination in Mind

Suryakumar also shared India’s broader T20 World Cup strategy, hinting at a batting-heavy lineup supported by multi-skilled bowlers.

According to him, India could field seven specialist batters along with an additional batter at No. 7 or 8, while relying on their main bowlers to cover the bulk of overs.

He highlighted the importance of the core bowling group:

  • Jasprit Bumrah
  • Varun Chakaravarthy
  • Arshdeep Singh
  • Axar Patel

Together, SKY believes they can consistently deliver 16 overs in a match.

Meanwhile, all-round options like Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, and even Abhishek Sharma could contribute a few overs each, giving India unmatched flexibility.

“In aggressive T20 cricket, we need an extra specialist batter lower down the order. With our core bowlers covering most overs and the all-rounders chipping in, a seven-batter plus all-rounder structure — even with an eighth batter — could be perfect for the World Cup.

Embracing the Pressure of Defending the Crown at Home

With India set to defend their T20 World Cup title on home soil, Suryakumar admitted the pressure would be immense — but welcomed it as part of the challenge.

“Home games always come with pressure, but that’s what makes it exciting. Going for a historic back-to-back World Cup win in front of our fans — something no team has done before — feels like a positive responsibility.

The energy from the crowds across venues will be massive, and we’re all looking forward to it.”

Fearless Batting Is the New Identity

After India’s dominant 4-1 series win over New Zealand, SKY praised the fearless approach of the batting unit and said he actively encourages players to back their natural game.

“Every batter has their own style — whether it’s Abhishek, Ishan, or Sanju. They play the same way for their state teams and franchises. I’ve told them to trust that instinct. If hitting a six on the first ball feels right, go for it. Make decisions based on the pitch and conditions.”

He added that this fearless mindset has made leadership easier for him.

SKY’s Personal Comeback Formula

Suryakumar also opened up about the changes he made to revive his own form, especially his approach in the early overs.

After a short break following the South Africa series, he returned refreshed and rethought how he paced his innings.

“Earlier, between 2021 and 2023, I used to attack immediately — striking at 200 to 250 from the first few balls. Now I take the first 5–7 balls to settle, then double my strike rate after that.

This small adjustment worked from the first game in Nagpur and helped me build momentum again.”

The Big Picture

With fierce competition for spots, a flexible team structure, fearless batting, and smart workload management, India’s T20 setup is clearly being shaped with the World Cup firmly in mind.

The much-anticipated opener decision on February 7 could set the tone for the final combination — and offer a clearer look at India’s championship plans.
