Lucknow — Marking Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on Thursday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the 1947 Partition as a “dark and painful chapter” in India’s history — one that, in his words, was “born out of appeasement politics that tore apart Sanatan Bharat’s unity.”

Speaking at a memorial event in Lucknow, he accused the Congress of engineering a political settlement that resulted in the dismemberment of the nation, triggering one of the largest and bloodiest forced migrations in human history.

Adityanath credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “reviving a forgotten history” by instituting August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in 2021.

“Today, the entire country mourns and remembers the horrors of August 14, 1947 — the bloodshed, the displacement, and the trauma that scarred generations,” he said.

Pangs of Partition and the Breaking of a Nation

The Chief Minister painted a vivid picture of the cataclysm that unfolded in 1947. Families that had lived together for centuries were ripped apart overnight. Friends were separated by newly drawn borders, never to meet again.

Parents lost children in the chaos of migration; children were orphaned in the violence. Neighbours turned against each other, homes were abandoned, livelihoods destroyed, and centuries-old cultural bonds were shattered in days.

The riots, massacres, and mass rapes that accompanied Partition claimed between 15 and 20 lakh lives, while crores were forced to leave behind their ancestral lands in West Pakistan — cities like Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Multan — to start anew as refugees in an uncertain India.

Congress Accused of Neglect and Erasure of Suffering

Adityanath alleged that the Congress leadership, driven by a hunger for power, not only divided the country but also later ignored the plight of those who had lost everything.

“The Congress never made any sincere effort for their rehabilitation,” he said, accusing past governments of “complete apathy” towards displaced Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Christians.

“No memorials were built, no museums established, no systematic remembrance of the horrors suffered by those uprooted from their ancestral homes. Their stories were erased from the nation’s collective memory,” he added.

Rehabilitation and CAA Benefits for Displaced Families

The CM lauded the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as a landmark measure by the Modi government, granting displaced refugees — including those from Jammu & Kashmir — both citizenship and rights to contribute meaningfully to India’s growth.

He announced that the Uttar Pradesh government will provide land leases and full rehabilitation to all eligible CAA beneficiaries, underscoring the state’s commitment to protecting their rights and dignity.

Exhibition on Partition Horrors
Inaugurating a special exhibition in Lucknow, Adityanath urged citizens to learn from history and ensure that such a tragedy never repeats.

The exhibition portrays the grim reality of Partition through digital archives, rare photographs, old newspaper clippings, preserved personal belongings, and official state records.

It captures the faces of anguish, the chaos of crowded refugee trains, the empty streets of abandoned villages, and the haunting eyes of survivors.

“It is vital to connect our younger generations with the truth of what happened — the massacres, the forced migrations, the breaking of the human spirit. Only by remembering can we guard against repeating history,” the CM said.

The day’s commemoration served as both a tribute to those who endured Partition’s horrors and a call to preserve their memory as an integral part of India’s national consciousness.
