PRAYAGRAJ: In a firm stand against campus violence and ragging, the Govind Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute in Jhunsi, Prayagraj, has expelled a senior PhD researcher after he was found guilty of physically assaulting a junior scholar residing in the same hostel room.

The accused, Ved Prakash, and the complainant, Ashwini, were sharing accommodation in the institute’s hostel. According to the victim’s complaint, Ved Prakash repeatedly subjected him to harassment and physical assault.

The situation escalated on the night of the 4th, when the junior scholar was allegedly beaten again, prompting him to immediately alert the police control room.

Police officials, along with hostel and institute authorities, reached the spot promptly.

Following a preliminary inquiry and separation of both students, Ved Prakash was initially suspended and removed from the hostel.

After a detailed investigation by the internal inquiry committee and approval from the Anti-Ragging Cell, the institute confirmed his expulsion, permanently barring him from entering the campus.

Institute PRO Dr. Subhash Kumar stated that the Anti-Ragging Cell’s report categorically established the involvement of the senior scholar in harassment and assault.

Although Ved Prakash has just two months remaining to complete his PhD, he will now be allowed only to appear for his viva through alternative permitted mechanisms under institutional rules. The victim, Ashwini, is currently in his second year of research.

Zero-Tolerance Policy Toward Ragging

Ragging has been banned across Indian educational institutions, yet it remains a disturbing reality.

While laws and strict campus policies exist, incidents continue to surface, often leaving young scholars traumatised, mentally scarred, or even driven to extreme steps like self-harm or suicide.

Many students have had their academic futures jeopardised due to such abuses.

Institutions like Govind Ballabh Pant Institute have reiterated that they will not tolerate harassment or bullying of any kind.

This decisive action reinforces a critical message — research spaces and academic environments must remain safe, dignified, and free from intimidation or violence.

Ragging not only destroys academic culture but also undermines the very purpose of higher education.

Ensuring student safety is not merely an administrative responsibility but a moral commitment. Swift disciplinary action such as this serves as a strong deterrent and a reminder that no seniority or academic standing excuses abuse.
