PM Modi Calls for 150 Years of Vande Mataram Celebration, Urges Nation to Draw Inspiration from Song’s Timeless Spirit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Mann Ki Baat address on Sunday, called upon citizens to commemorate 150 years of India’s national song Vande Mataram next month — a song he described as the embodiment of India’s eternal patriotism and civilizational pride.
Modi reminded the nation that Vande Mataram, composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay on November 7, 1875, and later sung by Rabindranath Tagore in 1896, was not just a song but a revolutionary call that united India’s soul during its struggle against colonial rule.
If love for Ma Bharati is a feeling beyond words, Vande Mataram is the song that gives that feeling a voice,” the Prime Minister said. “It infused new life into a nation weakened by centuries of servitude.
Though written in the 19th century, its spirit connects to the immortal consciousness of India that is thousands of years old.”
He announced that nationwide programs will be held to mark the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, urging Indians to celebrate it as a symbol of India’s unity, resilience, and cultural resurgence.
Generations of Indians have seen a magnificent vision of Bharat Mata through the words of Vande Mataram,” Modi said. “This is the India we must continue to build — vibrant, strong, and self-reliant.”
Beginning his address with greetings for Chhath Puja, the Prime Minister extended special wishes to the people of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Purvanchal, calling the festival a shining example of India’s environmental harmony and devotion.
Shifting focus, Modi revisited an appeal he had made five years ago — encouraging citizens and security forces to adopt Indian dog breeds.
Commending the BSF and CRPF for embracing indigenous breeds, he said, Our native dogs have proven their courage and intelligence.
One such CRPF dog detected 8 kg of explosives in a Maoist-affected area — a proud example of Atmanirbhar Bharat in every field.”
He also paid glowing tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, whose 150th birth anniversary falls on October 31, urging youth across India to participate in the Run for Unity.
Sardar Patel’s life was dedicated to uniting India’s diverse regions and hearts. Participating in this run is not just a tribute, but a pledge to uphold the unity and integrity of our great nation,” he said.
Modi concluded his address by highlighting inspiring stories from across India — from Sanskrit content creators to coffee growers in Odisha’s Koraput, mangrove planters in Gujarat’s Dholera and Kutch, and a “garbage café” in Chhattisgarh’s Ambikapur where plastic waste is exchanged for food.
Through his words, the Prime Minister painted a picture of a resurgent India — rooted in tradition yet striving towards innovation, guided by the immortal chant of Vande Mataram.
