PM Modi Greets Tarique Rahman on BNP’s Strong Electoral Mandate in Bangladesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended his congratulations to Tarique Rahman, chief of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), following the party’s emphatic performance in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections.

With trends indicating that the BNP is poised to secure a comfortable majority in the 300-seat Jatiya Sangsad, Modi conveyed his message even before the Election Commission of Bangladesh formally declared the final results.

Local media projections suggested that the BNP was likely to cross the 200-seat mark, ensuring a clear mandate.

In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister praised Rahman’s leadership, stating that the outcome reflected the confidence and trust reposed in him by the people of Bangladesh.

He described the victory as decisive and significant for the country’s political trajectory.

Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to maintaining close and constructive ties with Dhaka, expressing support for a Bangladesh that is democratic, forward-looking, and inclusive.

He also conveyed his eagerness to collaborate with the incoming leadership to further deepen bilateral engagement and advance shared priorities in development and regional cooperation.

The message, in which Modi tagged both Rahman and the BNP, underscores New Delhi’s readiness to engage with the new political dispensation in Dhaka.

India had earlier reached out to Rahman following the passing of his mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had travelled to Dhaka in early January to personally convey condolences.

Notably, during his campaign, Rahman refrained from making any remarks critical of India, a factor that observers view as significant in the context of bilateral relations.
