NEW DELHI— In a major boost to India’s education and employment sectors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched the ambitious PM Setu Yojana, aimed at upgrading the country’s technical training infrastructure and linking it directly with industry demands.

Speaking at the Kaushal Dikshant Samaroh (Skill Convocation Ceremony) in New Delhi, the Prime Minister also distributed degrees to graduates and announced several key initiatives designed to empower youth through skill development and financial support.

₹60,000 Crore Investment to Modernize ITIs

Under the PM Setu Yojana, the government will invest ₹60,000 crore to upgrade 1,000 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the country.

Modi emphasized that this initiative will connect India’s technical education system directly to industry needs, ensuring that young graduates are “job-ready” and aligned with future skill requirements.

“India is a nation of knowledge and skill,” the Prime Minister said. “Our intellectual capital is our greatest strength, and when our skills and knowledge are aligned with the nation’s needs, their power multiplies many times over.”

He added that the 21st century demands rapid advancement of local talent, resources, skills, and knowledge, and India’s 15,000 ITIs are key drivers of this transformation. Currently, these institutes offer training in around 170 trades, making them vital for both industrial and economic progress.

Linking Skill to Self-Reliance

PM Modi described ITIs as not only “centres of industrial education” but also the “workshops of an Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India). He said that the upgraded ITIs will soon feature state-of-the-art machinery, industry-led training programs, and modernized curricula designed to meet both national and global skill demands.

“In essence,” he said, “the PM Setu Yojana will bridge the gap between India’s youth and the world’s skill requirements.”

New Schemes for Bihar: Student Support and Skill Empowerment

During the event, the Prime Minister also launched two major schemes for Bihar —

  1. The Revised Mukhyamantri Nishchay Swayam Sahayata Bhatta Yojana, which will provide a monthly stipend of ₹1,000 for up to two years to five lakh graduates annually, along with free skill training, and
  2. The Reimagined Bihar Student Credit Card Scheme offers financial assistance to students pursuing higher education.

5,000 New ITIs in the Last Decade

Highlighting the government’s progress in vocational training, PM Modi noted that in 2014, India had around 10,000 ITIs, but over the past decade, nearly 5,000 new institutes have been established. “This expansion reflects our commitment to preparing India’s youth for the jobs of the future,” he said.

The Prime Minister concluded by reiterating that education and skills are the twin pillars of India’s growth story, and initiatives like PM Setu will help make India the global hub of skilled manpower in the coming decade.
